Combat Training

  • Konrad Poplawski, a 22-year old Navy hospital corpsman, is about to be deployed as a battlefield medic with the 2nd Marine Division, which has served in deadly battlegrounds in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But first, he is making a pit stop at Cook County’s Stroger Hospital, which the Navy says is among few places here in the U.S. that provide experience treating the types of wounds he will inevitably see on the battlefield.

For so long “the first time a corpsman got any trauma experience was when they were deployed, and some would just freeze up,” said Captain Paul Roach, a U.S. Navy surgeon at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center north of Chicago. “We don’t want that to happen anymore,” said Capt. Roach, who heads the program in the Great Lakes region.

The Navy is working to formalize a pilot program that has been tested here for three years, rotating newly enlisted hospital corpsmen—the combat medics for the Navy and Marines—and those needing a refresher while they are back home, for six to eight weeks through Stroger Hospital’s trauma center. The 14-bed unit treats over 6,000 trauma patients yearly, many of them with penetrating, life-threatening wounds akin to those on the battlefield.
We don't know why Toni, Kim, Tim, Tom and Rahm don't advertise this more.

“Come to Chicago for trauma experience. If, by the end of your training, you’re not a patient with trauma, you will be considered an invaluable asset at any trauma center not positioned in a third-world-shithole-like City. So what are you waitin’ for? Come to Chicago and experience all that this city has to offer.”

City of Chicago Propoganda Minister

I pray that he and his Marine comrades all return home safe and sound.

We have been doing this for years. The program began at Rush University, with CFD as a partner some 10 years back. It was very humbling when I got my first corpsman or army medic on an ambo with me. Here, the tables have turned. When my father began as a medic, Nam had just “ended” and he and his classmates were taught by and included many combat medics and Corpsman. Now I am teaching them. Let that sink in.

I’m glad the program has expanded here, and that our men and women in uniform will have hard trained medics and corpsman when they his the battle field. They deserve no less.

Don't know how it is now, but the old trauma unit which was on the 3rd floor of the CCH was quite the place. I can remember going there and seeing victims with chests open and blood and gore on the floor making it very slippery. However, the doctors there did an awesome job and saved many lives. Great training for anyone in the medical profession.

Could never figure out why the unit was on the 3rd floor.

Wish the army did this back in the day. I was an army medic during Vietnam and our training sucked like a sucking chest wound. After training I thought I was so good. First casualty I realized I was an 18 year old, E3 unprepared dumbass. Thankfully I worked with an bunch of great senior NCO medics and learned quite a bit.

Re: Bring Chris Home
There is a network of major corporations who participate
in a program to transport children to speciality hospitals
for operations/chemo treatments at no cost. They volunteer
unused jets and pilots.
The Air Ambulance is a special craft. It's worth a try to contact
them to see if they could pitch in to cover the cost.
There's always the Trumpster, but ya gotta pick up that phone
and call.

Was in a reserve medical unit early 2000s. Our medics spent the first day of drill weekend up there each month.

I did the same, but in reverse order. Served 1 year in Vietnam as a corpsman ( or as Obama would say) corpseman. Got hired here as a paramedic. Have to say, nothing I dealt with here was different than Nam. Except for the verbal confrontations, and chances of being sued. The trainees sense of humor will most definitely change though. They just have to remember, "parts are parts".

I do volunteer work at an airport USO lounge. Whenever Navy or Marine Corpsmen or doctors are passing through I ask them if they trained in Chicago and invariably the answer is yes. I tell them I grew up in Chicago and did they ever spend any time at Holy Cross Hospital. Been doing this for a couple of years and have been told it is good preparation for the "Sandbox".

Isn't it nice that Chicago does have a role in training our military medics for the battlefield. Come to Chicago for battlefield training. Ha. Ex Marquette Park person.

Excellent way to train no doubt about it.
More battleground injuries than anywhere else in the world.
(Maybe Mexico, but their shots are multiple and bleed out quick)
Plenty of combat experience can be had in a couple week at St.Rogers.
If the doc stays any longer he may be treating his own GSW.

Another caveat would be is after a stint in Chicago, he may find that being a SeaBee is better, safer and move appreciative.

And I do like the name Capt. Roach...might rename the sloop.

Mike Madigan will train at the Chicago Police Merit Board hearings
Ringling Brothers will train at the Chicago City Council
Fidel Castro descendants will train at COPA
Ald. Arena and Newt Minow will train at a vast wasteland
Pam Zekman will train at Cindy Crawford's
SWAT will train at WWF
Toni Preckwinkle will train at Calvin Kleins
J.B. Pritzker will train 'off-shore'
Rham Emanuel will train 'off-key' at the Old Town Music Piano School

The training has been going on since at least the early '90's. Not only do we have the blind leading the blind, but a corpse teaching the Corps.

I hope the military will let him arm himself with a firearm. All though he/she will learn a lot from working at Stroger, they have a better odds of themselves getting wounded or killed on the world class streets of Chicago then on some other battlefields halfway across the world.

This begs the question, if Chicago functions as a training ground for medics, would it not then also function as a training ground for terrorists? It would have to, right?

Further, what incentive is there to end the violence there, when it is so useful as a training environment? It seems to me this is much too valuable to shut down...which might just explain why it hasn't been shut down after roughly half a century.

I don't know why people are finding this a shock - it's been going on for years and I think adequately prepares you for what you'd see in a warzone. You're treating hostiles who don't speak what we could consider English. But if you want to be a healthcare worker and want to learn top-notch techniques, this is the place to do it - in the gutter.
