LA Style?

If CPD can't steal from the right coast, might as well steal from the left:
  • Sean Malinowski was torn between two cities last year: chief of staff to Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck and $250-an-hour consultant to the Chicago Police Department, helping create new, high-tech crime-fighting centers.

“I used all of my vacation time and days off to do this,” Malinowski says. “My family time suffered. I’m a little worn out by it.”

Invited to Chicago by Supt. Eddie Johnson to lend his expertise after the city suffered one of its bloodiest years in decades in 2016, Malinowski was hired under a $1.1 million contract between the city and the University of Chicago Crime Lab. The lab’s job: to help build and operate Strategic Decision Support Centers, where cops and civilian analysts monitor gunshot detectors, surveillance cameras and other data to pinpoint where crimes occur and where they might happen next.

In essence, Malinowski’s job was to show the Chicago department how to use its own technology to fight crime, L.A.-style.
He seems knowledgeable in computer systems, but he spouts the line we've grown tired of:
  • As the centers opened, the numbers of violent crimes fell. Shootings in Englewood dropped 35 percent in 2017. Murders declined by 15 percent across Chicago.

“People will say this was just a momentary blip, but I don’t think so,” Malinowski says. “Something happened.”
Short term gains don't indicate long term trends. We've said it time and again and 2016 proved us correct. Basing your argument on Englewood, which is something like 50% vacant land with a population that has declined by double-digits in recent years.... well, there are other long-term trends at work.

The jury is still out on shot-spotter cameras. Check back in a few years.

Ok did the geniuses factor in that in 007 the population is at a record low? Every block has multiple vacant houses along with the fact that Hispanics are moving in to the area in droves. The computer stuff can be of use but it's not the driving factor for the decline in shootings in 007.

I found the article to be a joke. They have been fast tracking tearing down a the buildings in Englewood. The population is way down or gone. That's why the shootings have shown down. It's scorched earth. Many things were at play and it's to complicated to say one thing did it.

I know that the CPD is currently down over 200 dics from the hiring plan, but I’d be curious to see to how far off the other numbers are. It’s certainly convenient for 9.5 that the media never seems to ask the right questions when it comes to the bullshit numbers and disinformation put out by city hall.

You cops are just a bunch of uneducated knuckledragging rough necks. What do you guys know about gangs drugs or violent crime? See it was shot spotter that caused the drop in homicides (although marginally) not anything else. We will listen to the criminal justice experts from the unversities not you beat pushing chumps on the street. Oh wait a minute bing bing bing. Shot spotter is going off again hurry up and rush to the location so you can intercept. So says my computer. Oh But don’t mention anything about the rise in vehicular highjacking or crime across the board now spreading to other parts of the city. It’s those homicide numbers that are the precious ones. Not the number of people actually shot (which is still ridiculous) or the fact that modern medical is saving more people.

Chasing them and arresting them only does so much.

Foxxx needs to convict them, and send them to prison for a long time if Chicago really wants to lower crime rates. If they are locked up, they can't commit crime in the neighborhood. Not only are the people in the neighborhood safer, but so are the thugs if they are in jail. Come on Kim, do your duty for the people stuck in Englewood.

Just saw an ad for a California physics on TV they are only charging one dollar a minute. So by my reckoning city could save $190 an hour with same results. Or I could rent the city my crystal ball for $20/hr. This sounds like a left coast thing, but must work in LA since there homicide rate is so much lower than ours.

Poor guy. His family time suffered and he's a little worn out? I'd happily use all my vacation time and days off to make $250/hr "consulting" on some ineffective crime-fighting strategy. How do these assholes even look at themselves in the mirror, complaining about being ridiculously overpaid to do essentially nothing, while also making what I assume is a healthy six-figure salary at their regular job? Are we supposed to feel bad for this guy because he made this amazing sacrifice of his family time to get paid $250/hr? Didn't he weigh that sacrifice into his decision when deciding how much his services should cost? Cry me a river, you whiny, entitled little bitch. Well, at least now Chicago will be crime-free, just like L.A., right?

It's hysterical.
Lamon, Jed and the pastors got into a huge fight, pushing, shoving, swearing at each other. You can see JB up near the podium but soon after he runs off. Hysterical to watch.

He's also one of the tools pushing this hunch lab bullshit. Make the beat car stay on the beat, ok, but then tell them they have to spend a certain amount of time, 15-45 minutes in a containment area, a block or two by a block or two. And if their GPS shows they left the hunch lab box area, they have to go back and start their time all over again. Childish nonsense, derived by some liberal goofs, trying to sell their wares at the cost of millions. And they use a couple of college kids to "analyze" the guessing of where crime is likely to occur on the beat. Something a good Copper can do all on his own after he or she hones their skills a little. This is all liberal gibberish. The Sgts and Lts they put in these rooms are just clout-kids or some other goofs looking for a straight day gig off the streets. Very few of them have any real police or operational skills, and they just forward junk information via email. They are just like cpic. Hurry up and get something out on the air and send the emails up the chain so it looks like we know what we're doing. Were on top of it boss, look at us, we're in the know. Hurry up and call us with your information so we can forward it out. Hunch lab is gibberish. Analyze data to tell you that a criminal, thug or nut lives on the beat and if you stay close to his house, or his mama's or baby mama's house you might make him think we know what he did, is doing or is about to do, so he better behave himself. OR ELSE! And when you see him, tell him headquarters is going to make the commander and tact Lt go out for lunch, and then go knock on his door and give him a custom notification that we think he is a criminal, thug or nut, and his activity places him in a category deemed likely to cause him to be the victim of a crime in the future, and if he doesn't stop or change his lifestyle, we're going to put his color photo on a sheet with other criminals, and put it up on a wall in the station so that all the police offiers in the district know to add it to their reports that you are deemed a criminal and to what degree of a bad guy we thought you were. FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

Chicago native here. My father retired from California Highway patrol. Most cops out here like it, in that they're have been incidents where a shot spotter helped coppers get to the scene much faster than waiting for a dispatch.

Assailants are usually long, long gone. But lives have been saved, because response time of diligent coppers was quicker.

NOW as far as LA's crime rate being much lower? You can attribute that to gentrification pushing certain folks out of LA and to Las Vegas. As well as LAPD fudging numbers, which they learned to do when Bratton left NYPD to go to LAPD. Same turds, just a different toilet with bikinis and palm trees.

FYI: Malinoski is from Boston and went to University of Illinois. He was hand picked by Bratton to be his man servant at LAPD. Sean traveled with Bratton on his many trips to D.C. and NY, making all the political contacts. He has zero street time and worked in the building his whole career. They put him in charge of Comstat at LAPD, which is only a dog and pony show for the politicians and community leaders. Nothing that he is doing at CPD is used for crime fighting in LA. Not sure why he's complaining about all the work when he is getting $250 and hour considering he makes close to $260,000 a year as a Deputy Chief. If he is in the DROP program he makes another $170,000 to $180,000 a year for 5 years plus interest. Crime does pay in LA.

I work in 007 and was forced to go to these sdsc meetings when it was first starting up. So the city sends all the equipment and furniture to start up the room. And they sent the wrong table it was to big for their liking. So this guy along with the commander for at least 2 weeks have a hissy fit about the table being wrong. Mind you not one word is uttered during this time about any of the shootings or strategies to combat them but many utterances about how the table is the wrong size. Point being is that this guy is basically an interior designer and has absolutely zero knowledge about law enforcement or crime. But if you need advice on officer furniture he's your guy. Oh and there was a happy ending we did get a new conference table.
