Did No One Pay Attention?

The dumb-assery of Chicago politician knows no bounds, as proven once again this aldercreature:
  • Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) is organizing a petition drive aimed at pressuring the Chicago Police Department to re-open the shuttered Wood Street station — as a satellite location at the very least — to combat a surge in violent crime tied to a reduction in police manpower.

When the Wood, Prairie and Belmont district stations were closed five years ago, local aldermen were assured there would be no corresponding loss in police manpower.

But Hopkins argued Tuesday that’s precisely what happened — to the tune of up to 100 fewer officers — in neighborhoods like Ukrainian Village, West Town and parts of Wicker Park once served by the Wood Street station.
100 fewer officers? Try almost 200 Sherlock. Behold, the power of FOIA!

And that's covering an area twice as big as a single 012 or 013 was back in the day. McCarthy estimated/promised that there would be around 524 officers in the new 012, knowing that the new building couldn't possibly hold more than 350 on a good day, and even that was going to be a tight fit.

NEWSFLASH to the media and the public living in 013:
  • The Department lied to you
  • McCarthy lied to you
  • Rahm lied to you
You were targeted because crime was "down" and it was thought that putting a new police station closer to Pilsen would enhance Rahm's rep among the constituency he decided to impress to win the next election. And besides, white people behave better (the racism of lowered expectations).

Except that when you dilute the police presence in "quiet neighborhoods" and double the police presence in "crime ridden 'hoods," well.....the criminal isn't completely stupid - they go where the police aren't.

Every cop on the Department warned that this was going to happen. We wrote about it. And we were ignored. Welcome to the new normal.

(Corrected typo at the asterisk. Instead of rumored 230 officers s/b 330. Instead of 240 by year end, 340. Otherwise, numbers are solid. Sorry for the confusion).

No one is assigned to fill the cars and lo and behold, a problem happens. They've been skating with this foolishness for several years now, stripping manpower out of the district with promotions, retirements and people bidding out occasionally and replacing very few of the numbers that left. Well, you got what you want, it is now too dangerous to be the police in 017. You have no back up. If you get into trouble, you will either have to over react or take what happens with only a partner to back you up. I don't know about Rahm and fat Ed, but I'm not getting killed or disabled to satisfy your need to reduce the manpower in what was a very safe district. There's no one here. Take the number of people on the medical abuse program and then take the number of people detailed out to cushy units along with caps personnel and timekeepers and secretaries and the number dips below 250 easily. The main problem isn’t the number of officers, it’s the quality. There are officers in 12 who are big fire department fans and think they should be dispatched from the station so they constantly hang out in the station until they get a job in their sector (10 or 20 sector) and then take 20 minutes to arrive. Offender gone, victim gone...19b. Theses are your desk dollies and future detective that constantly go unsupervised and are not held accountable. 2nd watch mgmt list is a joke for activity. I bet they won’t have 1 good arrest all year between the 15 of them.

So it appears that the huge open air drug market located on Lower Walker and Wabash in the infamous triangle is once again up and running full steam ahead despite those two cute little no trespassing signs the city put up. The filth and trash in huge piles down there are over run with rats, indigents everywhere doing the narco nod and every car that has to stop at the light at Lower Wacker and Michigan are surrounded by nefarious individuals as if they were in zombie land. This is all happening literally under the feet of those people crazy enough to venture down to the Magnificent Mile to enjoy a day of spending their hard earned cash on overpriced everything . . . or just wanting to experience the thrill of getting their cell phone, purse or wallet ripped from their hands by some rambunctious urban youth. How does the powers that be allow this to continue? They shut down the same situation in Pritzker Park on State Street because it was highly visible. Are they allowing the one on Lower Walker to flourish because it is in the not so visible underbelly of the city?

Trim that number down significantly with all the people who just bid out to the airport, mass transit, plus other districts and also take the school officers out of that number. Then you have the old crossing guard supervisor who mysteriously became ill and hit the medical for the past year after getting dumped to midnights but is at every one of her daughters basketball games, the flan sales lady who has also been on the medical and now enjoying herself at call back because of a bad knee but can attend dances and functions that require her to stand for extended periods of time while selling her flan. Ukrainian Village is kind of like the frontier. Last stop before the badlands. Reported crime has always been artificially low over there because the Ukrainians didn’t/don’t report a lot of it.

The old Ukrainians began fortifying their apartments in the ‘70s. Very common to find 80 year olds with their windows nailed shut. They trust nobody. KGB, GRU, CPD, people’s/folkses, young Ukies.....makes no difference. They figure everybody wants their treasure.

Of course, the newly settled hipsters know none of this.

It’s really dangerous for young women to be walking around over there after sundown.

Good luck☘️

Think about how those great detectives left before they had the chance to pass that knowledge, now forever gone, to the on-coming detectives because on-coming detectives were non-existent. They’ve done this all over the city. They combined 19/23 and they’re down over a hundred. 016 is down over a 100 in one district. 35th street for years was only worried about the homicide rate. They took every “body” they could and put it on the south and west sides. Literally a cop on every corner. Yet they’re still liking each other at an alarming rate. The bonus is now you have property crime and robberies out of control everywhere else. Truly a failure. This department is laughable. Absolutely no clue. The only exempt I’ve heard that has complained is the 018th District Commander at a Caps meeting. All these Commanders should be shouting from the rooftops but hey no commander has ever been demoted for increased crime rates in their districts so who cares right.

Why hasn't the big bad hard hitting reporters in this city going to criticize Rahm, the City Council, and McCarthy over this issue? I haven't seen any in-depth reporting on this subject. If the tribune wanted to make a real issue on police conduct maybe they would take this issue in a 4-5 day exposé. Another question should be how many police officers have been injured on duty in the last year compared to previous years as a result of manpower shortages? Here a hint to Kevin Graham: Compare the manpower in the districts prior the mergers to today numbers. Then compare the calls for service today as comparted to before the mergers. Then compare how many officers have been injured in the areas in question. Kevin it not hard. I thought you were going to fight for the union membership. Too bad we don't have union leadership with the balls of the leadership in New York City. Lets fact it, Rahm is just as bad as the mayor of New York. We are so screwed.

They gambled that if they closed 014 and merged them with 012 it would be fine because of gentrification and most of the 013 projects getting ripped down. At the time the new row houses that replaced the ABLAs weren’t open yet and crime in 012 was gone. Also, the jets in 013 were ripped down on warren and Washington BLVDs killing crime in 013. The problem that they didn’t think of is that the now Newley gentrified areas would be a perfect hunting location for the criminals. A candy land of sorts where easy pickings are plentiful. Hot cars, carjackings and robberies are out of control because there are no coppers to stop the bad guys coming in. They come in hot cars, do the crimes and get out quick with no police around. The bosses are still worried about gang related shootings and dope and keep the tac teams on the west end of the district hitting the gangs along western Ave and the border of 011. Meanwhile the real crimes are happening in Greek town and around the academy with not a tac team in sight because the bosses want that bag of dope a day arrest from Jackson and western. Ass backwards. Who cares about dope and pool getting shot at western and Jackson. Let em go.

Number of people living in the newly created district, and typical daily calls for service should dictate the number of officers assigned there. Policing isn't rocket science. You don't assign officers where the call volume is much lower than in your busy districts.

McCarthy was towing the party line. All superMario’s tell you what the mayor wants them to. Sure they shouldn’t lie but that’s the nature of the beast. The other possibility, yes slim, is that streetlight was unaware of 9.5’s intention to decimate the man power once the merger(s) occured.

All communities need coverage. Neither stations or the Areas should’ve been closed except maybe 021. On the other hand, as soon as 021 closed, the IIT staff/ students, Prairie Shores Residents and the Lake Meadows Apartment Residents experienced an increase in Robberies. In recent news, China Town residents are being robbed and carjacked. Oh yeah I forgot about the home invasions and package thefts. Last but not least, Dunbar High School requires the presence of entire 001st District Tact Team during their school Dismissal.

They closed 021 at the same time the Ickes Homes Residents and the Cabrini Green Residents relocated to the Dearborn Homes. What a war that was! Whose idea was that?

Most bank robberies occur around 1500hrs in the 001st District. Even the criminal knows.....

What, should they pay to issue new nametags, change all the stationery, rewrite all the court stuff, confuse all the residents, to make YOU happy?
025 became 025 thirty-five years ago. There's no need to confuse everyone because YOU see a conspiracy.

As a copper who lives in Pilsen (and there's many of us) there's days even a week that I don't see a beat car pass the front of my house!
The fact that they combined 2 "retirement" districts into one only meant one thing for residents of 012/013--- we got twice the dog asses!

It doesn’t matter if ANYONE gets hurt. You need to stop being a sheep. People are dying all over the city. And if you think for a second that if a cop gets killed that they will care about us? You are most certainly a sheep. Exactly what the city wants you to be.

Get over it. Those stats are right. So FOP doesn’t have stats. I don’t hear them complaining. They have the list of all active po’s who have dues and po’s who have fair share taken out
Pension board has audits every year and has records of sworn paying in and clear has a numerical listing of every sworn member. Get a calculator and count them.
Yea jag, you work in a district and that shows you the manpower of the CPD and everyone else, PENSION BOARD, FOP, and CLEAR. are wrong

017 the other night, 3 separate shootings, an armed takeover robbery and a car jacking. Doing more with less. A cluster fuck of epic proportion. The city and department don't want heavy handed tactics, fine, we got the message, what are you supposed to do? Run away? I am so through with this planned disaster waiting to get one of us killed.

12/07/2017 12:50:00 AM

Too dangerous to be the police in 017? Did you actually type that with a straight face?

I hope you include the front office po’s commanders office and CAPS in that idiotic statement. Maybe that’s why they are short, all the po’s in 011, 007 are afraid to transfer there because it’s too dangerous you tool

Think about how the loss of P.O.s has also depleted our detective ranks. Think about how much knowledge and experience we've lost in recent times due to retirement and didn't promote anyone to take their place. Think about how those great detectives left before they had the chance to pass that knowledge, now forever gone, to the on-coming detectives because on-coming detectives were non-existent. What's the current homicide clearance rate? 22% 12%?

They have made detective classes. Detective. There knowledge is gone forever. How could that be. The new people coming on are better educated and sure feel they are smarter than we ever were
That’s not the reason clearance rates are down. The makeup of the detective division is one reason and the second reason is half the time there are more working inside thanones on the street

I’m one of those jags you are talking about if you want an audit read the pension boards annual report which lists the number of sworn members. They are audited every year and have accountants audit the fund every year. If they are inflating the number of sworn how would they account for all the missing funds if like you say we are 3,000 down if they list 12,200 sworn they better account for 9% of those 12,200
salaries that were deducted and the fund received. That’s why they are audited and have accountants
Also, po’s live longer on average than 1 1/2 years after retirement because I’m sure you still believe that too

White people behave better??!! Try "people from a better social economic Class" behave better. Poor white people and poor black people along with other lower social economic classes of people behave the same especially when lumped into communities/living conditions together. It's just not reported the same.

You're right. But you need to keep it relative to the city in which we reside. When Chicago's lower working class poor living in tenements and over crowded neighborhoods were white folk, the majority of the crime was being caused by them.
But, keeping the argument relative to 2017 Chicago, the majority of lower working class poor are people of color. The white population, on average, are either professionals, artists(millenials) or city workers. The poor working class whites followed the jobs out of the city and refused to go onto welfare.
The democratic party has created this divide.
The democratic party calls law enforcement racist due to the fact the majority of inmates at Cook County are people of color.
The majority incarcerated are people of color due to the socio-economic make up of this city which was created, by design, by the democratic politicians in order to own the votes.
So you are correct, but SSC is also correct relatively speaking in that the white population in 2017 Chicago acts better than the non-white population.

1st off most coppers believe the union is in bed with the city. Names were changed to protect the the prior board. Second if u read this subject most are writing how short every district is and how dangerous it is with the shortage. FROM THE 330 THAT WERE IN EVERY DISTRICT IN THE 90 S TO UNDER 200 now. So big guy, where are all the coppers hiding. So keep pissing on the district guys and tell them its raining, because hey no agency lies. Something is not adding up in the eyes of most coppers. The majority of the primary minority are not the "working class" and have not been for generations. Generational welfare for the predominant minority in most large cities has become a way of life and proudly passed down to next generation. Why work when someone is stupid enough to provide you with everything you need in life. Food, housing, clothing, medical services, free education, spending monies and internet service. Only fools work and pay taxes is the minority mantra, that and the blame game. But keep voting Democratic it's really working well for someone.

I'm a citizen in 13 who is fed up with the crime increase. Taxes go up, up, up. Police staffing goes down, down, down. Crime goes up, up, up. The police need more manpower....to protect themselves and the community. It is a disgrace that the powers that be have put all our lives at risk.

Looking for quick hit ideas that can make a difference that I can help promote. I like the idea of hiring retirees as a stop gap until the manpower can be brought onboard. Why won't that idea work? Who would oppose it and why?

Also I heard there was an option to hire off duty police officers funded by SSA. Is that a good idea?
