Sun Times Butthurt

The FOP 2nd VP got tired of OFficers being confronted at home by reporters, so her fired off a letter to the Slum Times:
  • It has come to the attention of the FOP that you have gone to the homes of department members in the course of pursuing stories for your publication.

This letter is to notify you to cease and desist this practice. The proper and traditional means of contacting department members is through the Chicago Police Department. Police officers have always had an expectation of privacy in their homes. Their private residence should remain free from media access. Your use of this tactic is unprofessional and unethical, and is further illuminative of your publications’ general bias against the police.

I am informing my members not to speak to either of you, or any Sun-Times reporter, if they come onto their private residence. I am further advising them to call the police and sign complaints for trespassing if you refuse to leave.

    Sincerely,
    Martin Preib
    Second Vice President, FOP
  • The tenets of journalism, especially investigative journalism, call for reporters to interview the people they’re writing about to get their sides of the story.

Sometimes, it’s an email. Sometimes, it’s a phone call. Sometimes, it’s a trip to their home or office. Many times, it’s all of the above.

Make no mistake, Mr. Preib, this publication calls it like it sees it when it comes to the Chicago Police Department.
Which is telling. They certainly don't call it as everyone else sees it in terms of crime, regularly omitting descriptions of offenders. They accept Rahm's bullshit numbers as real despite mountains of evidence (much of it published here) that refutes what they are spoon-fed. We've outlined dozens, if not hundreds, of instances of corruption that their so-called "investigative journalists" ought to be investigating while two of their reporters (Main and Spielmann) "borrow" without attribution dozens of other stories. And far too often, the Slum Times tells one portion of a story (the titillating portion) to paint a certain slant while ignoring the other portion (the clout that allowed the misconduct to occur/continue).

Common politeness would dictate that an Officer's home is out of bounds - and that includes posting pictures of the house and address. Spouses and children don't need to get dragged into nonsense. If an officer isn't commenting, it's most likely because of Department policy or advice of Counsel. If an officer wants to comment, we're sure they'll find a way to contact a reporter.

Your practice Sun Times could put officers lives and their loved ones at risk.

I've said it before I'll say it again. Don't talk to the media about anything, good or bad.

Nobody goes to reporter's houses when they get caught getting high, dui or a host of other violations, including battery to police officers. Such a double standard.

POS media. Let them go hound drug dealers and murders, sticking cameras in their faces, standing by their homes, all without the protection of the police. I'd love to see that. But they're cowards. How about establishing a YouTube channel (we can't afford TV) and taking on the role of novice journalists and going to media members homes, recording their addresses for the world to see and recording their loved ones?

I do not know Mr. Prieb.

But good going.

I would suggest the Following:

The F.O.P. offer to arrange to be a contact for all of it's members.

This avoids the ambush, and communicates the officer's desire not to talk to the press.

That way if they refuse, we can say we offered them a a polite way to accomplish their objective.

Should they choose their method, the F.O.P. can send out a news release telling everyone that the Sun Times would not reply to a simple request.

And when their reporters call for a quote, sorry, busy reading this news release.

Delivery drivers, well hate to screw working guys, but after a day or two the message might get through.

Continue your fight Mr. Prieb.

The Sun-Times is biased and written at a 7th grade reading level. You might as well go to a middle school playground and ask the kids at recess what's going on in the city. Either that or go read the fictional young adult book, 'I Am the Cheese,' which is pretty much how they simply view conspiracies within the government and police department.

They get called out all the time in their comments section about how they shy away from naming the race of the offenders. Yet, they are too chickensit and dense to change their ways and do any adult reporting.

Too bad some billionaire conservative doesn't bankroll a new newspaper that does actual reporting. It could ask these important questions:

1) Do we really need 50 Alderman?

2) Is street sweeping necessary, or just an excuse to desperately get parking violation revenue?

3) Are low income families, especially single mothers, depending too much on schools, the police, and government to raise their multiple children for them?

4) Doesn't multiple merit promotions corrupt the CPD?

5) Why hasn't the Sun-Times or Tribune called out the mayor on the McDonald video cover-up before the election? Are the newspaper reporters corrupt, stupid, or both?

That's just for starters.

Now Retired.....

Make it harder for them to find you.

Something I've done since the late 70's and which I brought up at many roll calls.

Register everything you can, vehicle registrations, utility bills, cell phones bills, magazine subscriptions to a post office box. Your driver's license can go to your station address. Better than a non-published home phone number is to publish the number under an alias like a spouse's name.

If the media called me and came looking for me at front door I say I'll meet you there. Where are you? Where? Ha! I haven't lived there in years.

You know that the news media is not going to stop harassing police at their homes. Look what they do to the poor people whose loved ones have been killed, they take advantage of them at their most tragic and vunerable moments and then splash it all over news. More than we need or want to see. If they come on to your property, try and video them. Find out who they are and expose their personal information since all kinds of information is now available about police (i.e. various websites with police information, anti police groups putting up photos of officers, complaint information, social media & family connections and so on). So why isn't anyone checking on them to see if they are adhering to the ethical tenets of the Society of Professional Journalists? They are complicit with the one party political system in this town and it's obvious in their "journalism".

So, the Sun-Times " calls it as they see it regarding the CPD"? HUH! It is a rag sheet of yellow journalism and my almost 50 years of being involved in street incidents and reading about them in the newspapers verifies that observation. I think that the FOP and officers on the street need a different tactic. Maybe the next time a Sun-Times reporter shows up at an officer's house, police officers should picket the reporters house, take photos of the house and publish the reporter's name and address in some manner. Turn about is fair play. Maybe even investigate the reporter and see what he/she have been up to in their private life. It might be fun. Look at their private social media pages. Hire a private investigator to dig dirt on them.

So the paper calls it like it is in regards to CPD? THEY: constantly report that cpd stop a disproportionate amount of black men due to them being a third of the population but 70% of stops. They never state that a third of the population are involved in 85% of shootings/homicides. They write about the police killing black men at high paces but never report that cpd account for less than 1% of all shootings. They report that the police are beating black men but never report that out of the thousands of daily interactions with the community a very small percentage lead to altercations. They write that the community doesn't want the police and it's the police who need reform. Never write about the 100's of good families who love the police in the community and that reform is a two-way street. They always push the "he was a good boy who witnesses say didn't have a gun" narrative yet seem to forget that 4,000 people getting shot means there may be guns on the street and the cpd, being out 24/7 may run into a gun toting thug. They break down split-second decisions in the comfort of an office and after hours of review tell the world that you are a killer. They take a well written article from crime in Wrigleyville blog which lays out the hiring practices of cpd yet discount it because Rahm tells them it's wrong. Yes, the sun times really tells it how it is

With the current climate of witch hunting from IAD and COPA, I would suggest that perhaps the FOP round up a dozen or so retiree's willing to make a stipend for their time to go to these reporters homes and picket. A few of those retiree's might also do some investigative work looking at those reporters private lives. It can be posted here on this blog, on fb/twitter under assumed names/accounts, or on the FOP website.
Afterall, Turnabout is fair play.

A few years ago a Channel 7 News truck parked in a tow zone outside of Ricobenes while they went in to eat. A Sgt. called a car over and wrote the ticket on the truck, the stand up thing is the Sgt. wrote the ticket himself instead of letting the P.O. write it. Well low and behold the Channel 7 called the station, the Sgt. was called in and questioned about it. The Sgt. stood his ground and was smart enough to take a picture of the truck parked there. He also refused to bend and give them a pass. I witnessed this and was glad he had balls and for once got under their skin. The bottom line is why give them courtesy when they will put you and your family in harms way. I have heard the argument of not starting a war with the media, well guess what they are not our friends. Bottom line, Slum Times has declared open war on CPD officers. Taken on face value, officers should follow all laws and rules when dealing with any media. Well..... okay, I have a question for the Slum-Times.

Since reporters are now 'Journalists' and they're no longer are neutral arbiters who stick to the Who, What, Where, and When of a story like in times past. But are now Activist Journalists inserting their personal opinions in every 'news' story, shouldn't the PUBLIC have a Right to know all about where these journalists? And I mean 'all.'

Like where they live. If they are Married. If they have kids, how many, and where they go to school. And if married, where does the spouse work. Like say for a Government Agency [::cough:: Cook County Sheriff ::cough::].

I think it's only fair.

So c'mon Sun-Times, start printing full bio's of every one of your journalists so 'The Public' can better judge the repor.. oops, 'Journalism' in your newspaper.

Once you go down a one way street, you can't make a legal U-Turn. If Openness is the goal, let's do it right. Cops know where everybody lives, even if people try to hide, and put cameras on their residences. So, when an Investigative Reporter gets aggressive, publish his/her home address, so that we can send them a letter on how we enjoyed their writing. When the reporter who lived in Chicago, and published the address of the officer in the Ferguson case, an act which forced the officer to move, had Her address published; she had a Total Meltdown. She was living in the 020th District, and she wanted police to guard her residence. Her "Journalism" put the officer and his wife, also an officer in real danger! Recognizing one's vulnerability, is like an Epiphany. Stay Safe, do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MORE THANT THE MINIMUM REQUIRED OF YOUR CALL. PROACTIVE POLICING is Dead. Cops who engage in Proactive Policing have a greater chance of going to prison, than the offender they pursue. Baby "G"

We had a similar situation in the late 60's or early 70's. Pardon me but my 74 year memory bank needs a few deposits. We would stop an detain as long as possible every Sun Times delivery truck who committed even the slightest violation. We would explain to the drivers why they were targeted and after a long cordial visit of sharing war stories we would send them on way minus any citation. Our purpose was to delay delivery to high volume locations reducing sales at major public transportation hubs. This was in our own little way of protesting the coverage of Little Wally Jacobson's DUI arrest. The Sun Times is no more than a fully owned subsidiary of the Mayor, the black community, and all the other progressive assholes in this city. PS: say a prayer for the soul of ole Howard Anderson of the Traffic Division who was responsible for 2 of Wallys DUI's. Just remember NO DEMOCRAT is your friend. Screw 'em all every chance you get. Local media isn't going to like it

actually could and should.

The scum-times smug, nasty and intemperate response
to a legitimate and reasonable request is virtue signaling.

The Police have been reduced to second class citizenship
to facilitate a flawed and very biased narrative.

It's rank hypocrisy that the scum-times hold themselves up
as arbiters and sentinels of truth, fair play and equal time
in journalism.

Typical liberal circular argumentation:
"Do your job and we'll do ours."

They're at least good little Alinskyites, no?

Fuck every one of these craven, knee-walking,
wet-eyed, limp-wristed moral weaklings.

We hope the seething, barely suppressed Maoist fringe
of the left puts the fire of true belief to the asses of everyone
on the editorial board first before they try to wreck everything
else.

And did not the moral weaklings try to hide their nakedness
by juxtaposing their coverage of the struggle of our departed
brother Officer Bernard Domagala with a Rahm Emanuel ordered
hit piece which was orchestrated solely to reinforce the flawed
and very biased narrative that the Police of Chicago are out
of control?

That same narrative seeing very heavy circulation during
contract negotiations in order to separate The Police from
the public good will?

And if/when The Police in Chicago were ever to be finally
ruined in the name of "Reform," what manner of contribution
to the "Victory" could the media and the politicians lay
dueling claims to?

Would there be a parade?
Some great, heaving cathartic sigh of relief
from all corners of this city?

Will Rahm Emanuel reap plaudits and accolades
for "Taking On" and "WINNING against a mere 9k
imperfect human beings who overwhelmingly play
by the rules of civilized society versus cowering
from confronting the demographic subset that
revels in their contribution of nothing but destruction
and death while fully embracing willful ignorance
and avidly avoided responsibility?

They demand to be put on equal footing with the rest
of everybody else and they refuse to take substantive
steps toward taking a seat at the table of mutual support
and genuine common purpose with the rest of civilized
society.

Whither thus this breathlessly awaited "Victory"
over The Police?

Will everything else come to the fore and be
pursued with the same single-minded purpose
as "Victory" over The Police?

Or perhaps we and others are missing something
here in Chicago?

The Police are the problem.
Not the catered-to constituencies of record.

Right?

Police Like You Have No Friends.

If I could respond to the editorial it would be how about printing the whole truth and not half truths. Investigate the whole story before writing your so called truthful articles, you listen to street people who did not see a thing but will tell you that the police are at fault but never print a retraction when the truth is learned. Reporter should know for every action there is a reaction, they only take one side of the story and are quick to print to make their deadline. To print the truth you need to tell public the actual description of the offender not the vague descriptions let the public know that the black population is out of control and are committing crime with no fear of the police. quick hiding behind the freedom of the press do your job the right way not half- ass and maybe we will respect you until then pull your head out of your ass

Why don't you ticket the Media? Their Media permits don't mean shit if there isn't a camera and reporter on scene.

Just like under 9-100-200 City Vehicles are to park legally even if On a Job.

Oh...to everyone that checked their Emails this morning.

I guess. You think the truck drivers are the problem? They are writing the editorials? Directing the slant of news? Or maybe they are just working stiffs trying to earn a living. You be the judge.

The truck drivers for the newspapers and the drivers of the news stations are not the problem. They are just trying to earn a living. They don't do the do the reporting. The tv drivers just get assignments like you do and go there and meet the reporter. Half The paper drivers don't even know the rag reporters if they were standing in front of them.FOP should hire a security firm and have them send in people where the news and reporters drink and film them leaving drunk and driving. Turn it on them.

Stop bitchin and belly achin on a blog , the people on the street and working see and hear much . The people on the street working know where trucks are parked illegally , the people on the street know where people gravitate to after office hours.

If certain parties want to climb up on a pedestal and be holier than thou so be it , however if same parties are going to invade my personal space and harass my family and outright lie about events be it by omission or other wise , who is the bigger hypocrite the one's pushing the propaganda and carrying the water or the ones who know better and continue to let in occur unchecked ?

For as much as everyone hates the Demorats why do the people on the street working adopt their play book ? Have the info and then sit back and wait to use it in some failed attempt to " keep the peace " and not "start a war with the media " . That time has long past and they are winning the propaganda war unchallenged.

Look at the insane "PROTEST" by un-iformed "activists" in Rosemont . The "community" demands answers but is unable to look within and then it must be someone else's fault . The have the knowledge to fix their own problems but don't need to cause they can play the blame game , why would the people who work the street sink to that level ?

Like the Man said Police like you have no friends

Already talking lawsuit...amazing isn't it?

If my family lost a member or close friend for any reason, never like circumstances this family faces however there is a grieving period, a time for privacy and family...and there is accountability.

But the shitball, bottom feeding "lawyers" seek these families out immediately to get their blood draining hooks into them.

My Dad.... had some soliciting "lawyer" or one of his bandits shown up on our front porch during our time of grief, would find Dad personally, aggressively and efficiently removing that POS from our property.

Water their lawn instead . . . using a Weed-N-Feed style attachment . . . filled to the brim with a bright, neon colored, POWDERED fabric dye. The results are rather eye-catching, to say the least.

I suppose I should follow the advice of counsel and invoke the 5th Amendment now . . .

When the liberal press has the story written for them, it's really not technically investigative journalism anymore. It's sensationalism and unethical. Endangering innocent people's lives is not journalism. End of story.

Unless your Mom is a hardened, street-wise, old gal, she might have a heart attack with the media hounding her at the front door. And, the old man would be looking for me with a Louisville Slugger 2 X 4 in his rather massive hands. As the 2 X 4 splintered when contacting my head and just before becoming unconscious, I would hear my Father loudly professing how I disrespected my Mother. No thanks. I'll find an address other than one belonging to Mom and Pops. My Pops won't give a shit that I might have an explanation.
