Overreach

  • Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is suing the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, claiming the one-month delay in implementing the soda tax has caused $17 million in damages.

The penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks started Wednesday, adding a penny per ounce to the price of most bottled and fountain drinks in Cook County.

The tax was on hold for a month after a judge granted a temporary restraining order. It was expected to bring in $68 million through the end of 2017. To fill the hole created by the 30-day delay, Preckwinkle ordered 10 percent cuts across the board.
Prickwrinkle isn't going to see anything near her "projected" totals, just like she didn't see anything close to her "expected revenues" from the nickel-per-bullet tax or the $25 gun tax. Taxpayers are rapidly approaching the boiling point and this ought to be a few straws too far.

Wait until they hear that those layoffs in Foxxx's office are over four times what she's admitting to publicly.

Every time I purchase my beverages outside of Crook County, I will be emailing my receipt to Taxwinkle as a reminder of the lost revenue not just on the sugary drink tax but also on the portion of tax that would've been collected by the county before the astronomical sugary drink tax was enacted. Watched a kid, probably making minimum wage at his job at Menards, pay .20c tax on the Gatorade he bought to drink on his break, pathetic.

I have heard from a couple conservative media shows the suggestion of a "Chicago Soda Party" similar to the Boston Tea Party. Both suggested a mass gathering of fed-up Chicagoans to meet along the Chicago River and pour mass quantities of the outlawed sugar drinks into the already polluted water. If it happens and this city does anything to stop it by means of enforcement it is a sad day. Our brass lets BLM do whatever they want whenever they want but I sadly see them ordering the bike teams and foot guys to strictly enforce "littering" into the water to a bunch of conservatives who were raised correct and don't fight the police. Will be very interesting if it happens to say the least!

Im searching for where the county made cuts in the current budget but cant find any. Instead I found the county has 1500 vacant jobs in the budget that cost taxpayers 70 million to hold those positions even if vacant. Too many places to trim the budget but instead we, the tax payers, are slammed with more taxes. The county will spend 30 million in court cost in an attempt to extort 17 million.

Absolutely correct. A few years ago the County actually had a study done regarding this but have never released the study. County employees are paid over their private sector counterparts from 35 to 100 %, many jobs are unnecessary and many people do not work in their job description. As I recall the Chief Judge of the court system hired his two daughters to manage the jury at the Civic Center and they are paid $95,000 each, Just one example

Just reading a Tax Foundation article on the Philly soda tax experiment "Soda sales in Philadelphia have also declined since the tax went into effect at the beginning of 2017, threatening the long-run sustainability of the tax. According to some local distributors and retailers, sales have declined by nearly 50 percent." The same thing will happen in Chicago. Lawsuits, lay offs at Coke and Pepsi and removal of certain products in the Philly stores are also an impact of the tax. Still the talking heads that thought up this idea stand behind the tax.

How much does it cost Cook County taxpayers to pay the cost of health care for the illegals? How about those who live outside cook county and come to St Rodger for health care? How many collar county hospitals tell the indigent to go to "cook county" ? Any media investigative reporter have the balls to get the financials on that and report it in their "non-biased" rag? Surely not everyone gives a cook county address. Do we send the other counties "the itemized bill" for the cost of their constituents ?

Toni wasn't smart enough to come with this lawsuit on her own, had to be one of her staff lawyers.

To show how dumb the people are in Crook County when they go out to eat, whether in or take out, the establishment fills the glass/cup up with ice and then pours drink in, thereafter charging the tax based on the size of the drink ordered not the volume that was poured, the idiots dutifully pay the tax not knowing they got ripped. And when they eat out and order a glass/cup without ice thinking that now they will get more volume, than with ice, possibly true but there is also no indicator on the inside or outside of the glass/cup that the volume equals the sixe of the drink ordered. So for a 32 oz. extra large drink at your favorite burger place, you pay tax on the 32 oz. drink not realizing it could be 31 or 30 oz actually. Couple pennies in one case doesn't matter. However, multiple that same scenario millions of times in a year and customers are being short changed while playing the full amount of the taxed drink whether the volume of the drink matches the order or not. Seems this should be a basis for a law suit.

Was at Cabela's the other day with a friend and as usually I always get a soda pop on the way out to have on the trip back home. Friend says, we are in Crook County. I said thanks, good call. I put the bottle back in the case. Full Crook County.

Went to the grocery store with the wife and reminded her that we don't buy water or soda pop anymore in Crook County. I will travel to DuPage or Lake counties for those items or get them in Wisconsin and while stocking up on taxed items I will also stock up on the usual food items and pay a lesser sales tax as an added benefit. Fuck Rahm and fuck Toni.

They double plastic bagged everything, 24 bags at .07= 1.68. Stopped @ Cabelas, bought 100 rounds, saved 5.00. Filled my car w/12 gal of gas, saved .40 per gal = $4.80. Bought 2 cartons of cigs, saved $14. Bought some booze, saved $8.00. Went to Target, Walmart, and Meijer saved $15 on tax for my kids clothed, 7% in Indiana, 11% in Chicago. Had a nice meal with friendly wait staff. Didn't come across a pan handler until I came to Chicago. Stopped at the casino, saw some gambler with link card in their wallet. Had a nice, quiet time and saved about $50.00. Oh, I had to set my alarm when I got home to avoid home invasions. SWEET HOME CHICAGO, LAND OF THE FREE!!! And sanctuary city for MANY.
