Speaking of Signs...
We were headed out of town recently (no, not this weekend), and we were driving down the highway. You know those mile marker signs on the roads in and out of town?
They used to be spaced every half a mile, right? You can easily see a half a mile, maybe more, on a clear day and on any semi-straight section of highway.
Now there are mile markers are every quarter mile. Who came up with that bright idea? How many scarce tax dollars were wasted employing some connected relative to print quarter-mile and three-quarter-mile signs and install them up and down the highway? That's like installing signs in firehouses in non-public single occupant washrooms.

I was told it is a new federal regulation to help in the case of accidents.

Try to locate and get emergency services when you don't know where exactly you are. Signs ever quarter of a mile may be a good thing.

More useless government regulation. Area 2 has a small public parking lot. It has 21 parking spots. Guess how many are reserved as handicapped? A reasonable person would guess 2. Maybe 4 at most. Nope. Some idiot decided that 57% of the parking lot should be reserved for an individual with an alleged physical impairment. Yes 12 out of 21 spots are handicapped.

I think it's a DOT thing. I've seen 1/4 mile markers pop up out of state in the last year also. I don't think it's a problem associated with Illinois.
Some places in MN they are putting up tenth mile markers.

The Tollway spent more than $500K on some 4,500 mile marker signs.
They attempt to justify the signs being placed every quarter mile instead of every half mile by saying it will better help drivers to locate where they are if their car breaks down of they have a medical emergency. They further say it is safer because people won't have to get out of there car to find a reference point.
No wonder the tolls are so high.

I've been in states where every 1/10th mile is marked. Figured it was good for the state trooper having to work an accident. Reference marks were never more than 264 feet away.
But it is kind of idiotic to do it now, in a cash strapped state.

Those are addresses for the highway system. I don't think more location markers for a copper calling for help is a waste of money.
Indiana has them every tenth of a mile such as mile 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 etc. what's the big deal?? Michigan also has them every quarter mile.

I'd bet that 90% of the motoring public have no idea what those signs are for and wouldn't be able to tell 911 where they are if they were in an accident. Ask me how I know. They are good for triangulation at fatal accidents though.

Illinois strapped for cash?
$25 million was just approved for a study of an extension of IL Rt 53, that is only estimated to cost over $2 billion if built today (over $5 billion if built in 2-3 years and $20 billion if a Democrat gets elected Govenor or President).
It's about jobs.
It may just be a budget item that Blago put through years ago and nobody in the IL Tollway Authority wants their nephew losing that sign contract. Friends of the Swamp, thick as a mud bog and always smells afoul.
The best sign along the tollway besides Cracker Barrel Next Exit, is "You Are Now Leaving Illinois".
Those signs are needed. What if an emergency situation arises while traveling the highway and you need to summon help to your location? You are barking up the wrong tree on this one.
They should've made the signs out of LINK cards

Back in 2010 the FHWA required states to upgrade signs to meet reflectivity standards by 2015. The requirement for upper and lower case letters applies ONLY to those signs replaced under the reflectivity requirement, not all signs.

I have called ISP to report emergencies on the expressways and have given the mile marker and the ISP dispatchers said they don't use those

Don't remember that, but I do remember when city lamp posts had what hundred north, south, west, east you were at painted on them.

Yellow streetlights on major streets (State, Michigan,Cottage....) signified where the Fire Alarm Pull Box was.
Let me chime in as ISP...
You must have been on an Illinois Toll Road if you saw mile marker signs every 1/4 mile. They are not spaced like that most places around the state. They are on the Toll Roads, and it is great. When someone breaks down, or is involved in a serious crash, they can give their location to the nearest 1/4 mile, which helps our response times and the response times for medical personnel.
In the middle of nowhere, mile marker signs are usually every mile or 1/2 mile. As a Trooper, there have been times going to and from Springfield that I've rolled up on a crash or other incident and realized I was thinking about X Y or Z and hadn't looked at a mile marker sign for a while. Luckily, I've done the trip so many times I have a good idea where I am based on landmarks only. But most people driving on rural interstate don't have that luxury.
For all the dumb stuff this State spends money on, mile marker posts is one thing they should not skimp on. It could be of great importance to a motorist, or us.
ISP again. To the poster who said that ISP doesn't use mile markers, that is only in District Chicago. On I-72 between Champaign and Springfield, you can't exactly say "I'm currently 22 miles east of Niantic" to narrow things down. It's easy when you have an exit every four blocks or so, which means the mile markers don't matter all that much.
Yes like we needed all those CKC signs on the Eisenhower. Doesnt everyone have google maps, gps, etc. etc?
