Cop Injured, Chase Ensues

  • A Chicago police officer was injured after a chase that started on West Side and ended in the western suburbs Saturday morning, police said.

Officers observed the driver commit a traffic violation in the 4400-block of West Lexington Avenue at about 1:35 a.m. and initiated a traffic stop in the 600-block of South Kostner Avenue, police said.

The driver, identified by police as Kerry Holoman, 22, of Chicago, refused to provide his license or proof of insurance and sped away on the sidewalk, running over an officer's foot, police said.

Holoman drove west on I-290 and crashed into a light pole while trying to exit the expressway at 16th Street, police said. He was apprehended after a brief foot chase in the 1500-block of Harrison Street in Maywood.
We've heard there are literally hundreds of "chases" that never make it to termination lately, mostly on the west and south sides. The word has hit the street (as predicted) that CPD cannot chase, and the criminals know there is no punishment from the Court system, so there's no downside to fleeing and eluding. Any pursuit that actually makes it to conclusion is a rarity.

The other night in 015 we started roll call with this reminder.

"If you even think about starting a chase. Look at your partners then look at the photos in your wallet
of your loved ones. Then think about what it would be when these people see you stripped of your job awaiting
police board or criminal trial. And how they will be effected when you are convicted for doing your job."

It sucked the life right out of me. I only got out of car to eat and end my tour of duty.

Thanks to our politicians since this is only going to get worst.

I've said it time and time again
Some officers are so dense that even a brick to the head couldn't knock sense in their thick skulls
Traffic stops? Resulting in chases?
In today's climate? And then we're supposed to donate to your benefit when you catch time, possibly even separation ?
And spare me the "I'm the police, I took an oath, blah blah blah".
You took an oath for a job, a duty that no longer exists. Those in charge have told you so with every
roadblock and hurdle they've put in your way culminating in the last nail in the coffin the DOJ report
If you just go with the flow it's actually the best time ever to be stuck in patrol
BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT YOU TO DO ANYTHING!!!! Can't you get it?
If you still feel the calling to be the "real police" find a job in another jurisdiction and save your freedom
It's precious
Stay safe
Retired after 31

Has anyone ever compiled stats on what was discovered in these incidents unrelated to the original stop? It just seems that the offenders are really trying to hide something else, no just avoid a ticket for a burnt out light, etc. When you see the traffic stop videos that turn violent on YouTube you get the feeling that the complete story is not being told. The high profile shootings captured on video in the last year always have another component that seems to elude the media (drugs, guns, robbery, etc.).

Traffic stop with a DL or without...is that $110 at CL 09 or the usual 30 day Supervision?
But KeefHoloman will come out of this faster than Rahm at a news conference.

All that damage, injury and discipline started over a traffic ticket.
Keeps getting better doesn't it.
One less thug, a recovered gun (no UUW) and a bad driver off the streets.

I heard it all go down. A great job by the officers. Calm, cool and collected even after one of them got hit by the offender. They sounded completely in control and gave the supervisors no reason to call it off. And kudos to the supervisors monitoring it to let them go.

Don't chase.

Put the plate, make, model, color, offender and direction of travel over the air.

Light it up.

At the first sign of car not stopping, self terminate.

Park and put your location over the air.

Then close your eyes and try to forget you just saw a stolen car flee from you..

So, this driver is pulled over for a traffic stop and has none/doesn't want to give his DL or insurance. Then he gives a big "fuck you", driving away on the sidewalk fleeing the scene.

Two Questions:

1) Why are you officers that close to a car, that when the driver flees the scene, your foot gets "runt over"?

2) Once fleeing the scene and driving on the sidewalk, (a hazardous situation of possibly hitting "folks"), and I'm sure commiting several other traffic infractions in the process, you officers decide to chase said idiot when you should have terminated right there on the spot.

I'm guessing some of you younger officers haven't REALLY received the message. Maybe you should start off reading the order on vehicle pursuits, then when you finish, have a sit down with your fellow hard chargers and review the video of those officers in the 004 district back on 28 July of last year, start with that.

The revruns, "community", politicians, and police brass WANT for you to stand the fuck down, so give them what they want.

Your day should be to show up on time, uniform correct, log on to all cameras/PDT's, answer your jobs, code/write paper, only arrest on signed complaints, and repeat. Enjoy your furloughs, the 1st and the 16th. You can still be the police, just not proactive. When a vehicle flees from you on a traffic stop, get the plate and do an impound. Check your ego.

Don't be the next breaking news story on the 10 o'clock news!

Get well officer, I hope you and your fellow hard chargers fuckin learn something from all of this.

It's good to see so much support for our fellow officers. Even more Monday morning quarterbacks. Guys who stay fetal are the same ones complaining about the crime or the amount of patrol they get in their own neighborhood. Guess we are all on our own. Yet we mind enough to gossip about those who choose to work. Can't to the job? Not happy with the job? Then quit. So simple yet so ironic huh? I'm not a hard charger by any means. I'll make a stop or two a night. I might even write a parker. But some extend the belief of being fetal to not backing up officers. Stick together? Never. It's all for self and self for none. Trolls.

Here's the thing if you must do traffic stops make sure those camreras and mics work!! If they run then let them go!!! Make sure you give out as much info as you can in a calm and professional voice!!! After that clearly state you are not chasing and put your self down doing an impound report on the car. Boom! You did some work you didn't risk your life or your partners and if that car is found by city tow truck it will be impounded. If you want to do work you need to be smart! Even then things can go to shit and you can end up in call back or worse. Always be mindful of your surroundings and that includes your hands and feet.

In 012 We have cars flee to the 290 and it happened to me on a traffic stop. The plate came back clear. One of our good Sgt's (a beauty with brains) told me if it is stolen the victims got insurance and will get back their loss and if not stolen order the impound and showed me the order that no pursuit number is needed.

Special Order S07-03-05
IMPOUNDMENT OF VEHICLES FOR MUNICIPAL CODE VIOLATIONS

FLEEING VEHICLE IMPOUNDMENT UNDER MCC 9-92-035
Upon the discontinuation of a pursuit and unsuccessful apprehension of a fleeing vehicle or when a vehicle flees and no pursuit is initiated, Department members are authorized to request an impoundment of the fleeing vehicle.

1. Department members are authorized to request a vehicle impoundment when they attempt to stop a vehicle in a marked Department vehicle, with the emergency roof lights and siren activated, or in an unmarked Department vehicle, with the high-beam oscillating headlights and siren activated and:

the driver of the vehicle fails or refuses to stop after an attempt by the police to curb the vehicle; and

for reasons of public safety, the member(s), does not pursue, voluntarily abandons or discontinues the pursuit, or is ordered to terminate the pursuit by a supervisor.
