Hey Toni, You Ready for This?

Philly voters just learned how badly they got screwed by a democrat:
  • Soft drink shoppers are experiencing “sticker shock” at steep price hikes on their favorite products after a massive soda tax went into effect in Philadelphia Sunday.

The contentious soda tax secured passage in June but consumers in Philadelphia are still flabbergasted by the price increases the tax is sparking. In some cases, shoppers found that they were paying more for the soda tax than the actual product they were purchasing. The 1.5 cents per ounce tax on sugary drinks is implemented at the distribution level, meaning retailers must choose how much of the cost to pass onto consumers at the shelves. A 12-pack of Lipton Diet Green Tea at a Save-A-Lot in the city is now priced at $8.03, instead the $4.99 it costed in December, reports WPVI.
And how did such a thing happen? Someone failed Economics 101:
  • After driving up the cost of soda and other sugary drinks with a new tax, the mayor of Philadelphia is now trying to blame businesses for charging higher prices

[...] "They're gouging their own customers," [Mayor] Kenney said

[...] The distributors sells five-gallon boxes of syrup that can be used in soda fountains, and each box costs a retailer about $60. Thanks to the city's new tax, though, retailers have to pay $57.60 in taxes for each of those boxes of syrup.

"We're not talking about a couple of bucks on a $60 item," Andy Pincus, who owns Carbonator Rental Services, told Newsworks. "We're talking about $57.60 on a $60 item. It's too big not to pass on."
Prickwrinkle raised the County tax a penny per ounce, but it's still going to bite consumers hard. It's going to bite businesses even harder when people start shopping in surrounding counties and even Indiana. And remember, Prickwrinkle herself broke the tie vote, casting the deciding vote at the Board meeting.

The irony is that this soda tax -- like the gun tax, ammo tax, cannabis tax, blah, blah....-- will amount to nothing. A drop in the bucket.

Ultimately, massive property tax hikes will have to be passed and that will be the nail in the coffin for the working middle class in Chicago. It will precipitate a mass exodus that will leave only the rich (who can afford any taxes), and the poor (who will again be excused from paying any taxes).

And that, my friends, is how leftists create the very wealth disparities they blame on everybody else.

Isn't it true if you buy it with a SNAP card (or whatever they are calling Food Stamps today?), you wouldn't pay taxes on it? Any food you buy at the Groceries is "tax-free" for those on that "Entitlement".

Just another tax on those who don't have a SNAP card to "gets it without taxes on it".

The City needs the school district to file for bankruptcy (the numbers will only get bigger and bigger every year - the Gov was right in not giving them that money) and then use monies saved to have the State Police train the candidates/cadets.

So if you check this week's online ads for Jewel, you'll find a 24-pack of 12-ounce cans of soda selling for $4.99 (regular price $8.49). At a penny an ounce, the $2.88 Toni Tax will amount to a 57.7% sales tax on your soda, sugar-sweetened or not. On the regular price of $8.49, the $2.88 is "only" a 33.5% sales tax. But don't worry --- if you have an EBT food stamp (SNAP) card, you won't be charged the new tax (and a recent NY Times article says soda is the most popular item purchased with SNAP cards).

And as an added bonus, if you forget your cloth grocery bags, Rahm and Company will only tax you 5 cents on a 2-cent plastic grocery bag (7 cents total per bag), or a 250% tax on that 2-cent bag. Ah, isn't it a privilege to live in such a progressive, compassionate community!

Love your "Economics 101" remark. Same problem all libs have. They actually think that businesses absorb ANY taxes at all. A business simply passes on the tax (and all other costs of doing business) to you and me - the customer. Same thing with this $15/hr. bullshit; the jar only holds a certain number of M&M's, kiddies, and when you have to pay out more M&M's than you have in the jar, you close your doors.

The mayor has huge C.O.Jones to get up and accuse merchants of gouging when they are merely passing on the taxes that the mayor insisted would help the collective health of the comrades in Philly.

I just love watching liberals eat their young.........

Recently, I went shopping at an Aldi's, which is, of course, a discount grocery store.
I picked up a two liter bottle of a citrus flavored soft drink. It was on sale and it cost 79 cents. After checking out at the cash register, I reviewed the receipt and found that the item cost $1.14 with the taxes included. The City of Chicago had added 35 cents in tax to this beverage purchase.

Bear in mind, that Preckwinkle's soft drink tax has not kicked in yet (it starts next summer) and the Illinois General Assembly is mulling over adding a similar tax of its own. A beverage industry spokesman said the new taxes could add more than $6.00 to the price of a case of soda.

Since the taxes are applied per ounce, is there any chance that Coca Cola will reintroduce its classic bottle (6 fluid ounces)?

The next generation of bootleggers is going to be running cases of soft drinks from neighboring states.

Remember, the tax will not be charged to SNAP (food stamp, linkcard whatever recipients)....which makes the below info from a New York Times article 3 days ago borderline annoying/depressing

"The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft drinks, which accounted for 5 percent of the dollars they spent on food. The category of ‘sweetened beverages,’ which includes fruit juices, energy drinks and sweetened teas, accounted for almost 10 percent of the dollars they spent on food. “In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy of the soda industry,” said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “It’s pretty shocking.”

For years, dozens of cities, states and medical groups have urged changes to SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, to help improve nutrition among the 43 million poorest Americans who receive food stamps. .."

- - - - - -
The rich aren't stupid. Small New England state imposed high taxes on the very wealthy. A year or two later the state budget was in the red by $X amount. Surprised a lot of Democrats. Then they discovered that $X was exactly the same amount of state taxes paid by extremely wealthy individual Y who had moved to Florida as a result of the new tax law. One single person.

The Dems never get it. Just keep spending, raising taxes on whoever's left, and thinking up new things to tax, thinking somehow they can tax their way to prosperity. Never worked before; never will.

Here go the usual food stamp crybabies. The actual truth is that food stamps is an indirect subsidy to the farmers, still out of the USDA budget. Big box retailers and fast food joints fight to get access to food stamp purchases. I used to work in non-profit so I slept and breathed this stuff a few years. Food stamps is a great way to increase corporate revenues while getting poor democrat votes. It actually works on both sides of the aisle.

Repeat after me: the left is mentally ill.

Time and time and time again their policies blow up in their faces. Time and time again they destroy beautiful and viable locations.

And they NEVER, ever, ever, ever take the blame for anything.

They indulge in no introspection whatsoever. All they know how to do is bloviate, blame and tax. That's it, in a nutshell. They will take, take, take, take, take until there is nothing left to take and then they will blame you for not having more to give them.

They are delusional, megalomaniacal, infantile, whining, entitled parasites who wreck everything they get their grasping paws on. If thwarted, they throw tantrums, and they don't care who they hurt or what they trash.

They are controlled utterly by emotion and impulse: in short, they are toddlers in grownup bodies.

Anyone expecting anything but mayhem and chaos with such creatures at the wheel is as mentally deranged as they are. Stop expecting justice, honesty, decency, rationality or reality to appear anytime soon. It ain't gonna happen, not while toddlers are in charge.

There is no way to work around fools like this. They need to be forcibly put down and removed from power, and we do not yet have the testicular fortitude in this country to do what needs to be done: namely, put the toddlers in permanent timeout (in whatever way works best) and let grownups resume command.

I don't see that happening until they have wrecked things so badly that our very survival depends on getting their hands off the steering wheel. They have invaded every aspect of our lives, they run the media and our schools, and they have indoctrinated our young people with the most vile and nasty falsehoods imaginable, falsehoods that sabotage and undermine the culture and practices that actually support self sufficiency and freedom (traditional western civ/American values). They are entrenched in our culture. Rooting them out will be very, very hard. One president is simply not enough, we need to reverse a 50 year tide of madness. I do not see a tidy or nice way of doing this.

They have Chicago by the throat, soon it too will go the way of Detroit. They are the anti-Midas: everything they touch crumbles and is destroyed.

Get out while the getting is good and your house will still sell for something. If you stay and try to ride it out or carry the burden, all you are doing is propping up their idiocy and making their illusion of control last longer, no different than coddling a junkie that is going to OD the minute you turn your back. Everything you do that is productive and decent is just more food for the insatiable vampire. Leave it and let it die of starvation and shrivel in the daylight of reality.

The ship is gonna sink. Stop bailing and get on a lifeboat.

In Econ 101 you learn "Bad money drives good money out." Same goes for taxes, only significantly lower taxes will drive consumers and businesses that are able to go elsewhere to do just that.

The last time I was visiting in the Chicago area I was astounded at the sales, gas, and property taxes. Where I live the sales tax is 6%, my current property taxes are $1,972.00 for a 2600 sq ft house with a 2 car garage and a screened in 450sf porch on a 1 acre lot. Also no state, county or local income taxes. Oh, and the weather today is in 60's. Wonder what my taxes would have been in my old neighborhood, Marquette Park?
