Don't Fall for Retro

You younger kids don't remember the Newsletters that used to come out around Contract time, where Bill Nolan would close every single article with "...and enjoy your retro pay," as if that was the sole factor in determining how we'd vote on a contract.

In many cases, however, he was correct. Coppers looked at the short term money that the City had held hostage (without interest we might add), and disregarded serious issues that had real long-term consequences on seniority, discipline, or bidding rights. Cops finally started to wake up around 1997 or so and the Contract that Nolan presented to the members went down in a spectacular ball of flaming wreckage that also also led to the entire eviction of the Nolan ticket (including Dean Angelo).

We're coming up to another negotiating year and you young kids are going to hear a lot of things. Here's your chance to prove you're smarter than all of us dinosaurs were back in the day:
  • Don't be distracted by the "promise" of a retro check
Don't sweat the money issue. We'd suggest that the FOP ignore it, too. In fact, we'd go so far as to recommend that the FOP demand no more and no less than what Rahm awarded his inner circle in terms of percentage raises, and then walk away from that issue (Reminder - it was double digits).

Instead, concentrate on the following:
  • Round up the Baby Furlo Day to a full day
  • Round up the vacation time to full days, not hours;
  • Lower the time to hit maximum pay via compression - every other city maxes out at 20 years;
  • Restore Duty Availability to the kids - you got fucked last Contract;
  • If anyone says "More cars," throw them out of the FOP;
  • Refuse to negotiate disciplinary changes;
  • Reduce "merit" percentages
In fact, demand "transparency" from the City. For too long, everyone has to be "transparent" except the City. Screw that and screw them:
  • Post the "merit" picks;
  • post their sponsor;
  • post the entire promotional list in rank order so that everyone can see exactly how many spots the connected jumped up (justify that one);
  • post a real and attainable set of targets that cops can actually strive for in order to be Merit.
We'd also like to see how sergeants who had to be assisted over the finish line ("merit") a few short years ago suddenly manage to score #1, #2 and #3 on the current Lieutenants list, but since that crosses different Union lines, we'll probably never see that unless it reaches a Federal courtroom. Right Special Ed?

Anyway, the big issue is going to be reducing your Rights and protections under the contract. Money should take a back seat to all of this. Numerous bad actors are claiming that the Contract is "racist" somehow and protects bad cops. We aren't exactly sure how. A document that protects the Rights of coppers of all colors, creeds and orientations is nothing that needs alteration.

SCC, will you please run for FOP president? If you're worried about your identity, wear makeup like the band Kiss did. Wear the darkened helmets like the Daft Punk guys do (I honestly have no idea if they're musicians, dj's, or what!), get a Lone Ranger mask or Batman cowl...just RUN!!!

Your right SCC....screw the retro we can wait for it. It will come in time. This will be the most important contract ever! We should be getting a real raise this time just like the Mayors people got. Waiting for the 25th year for our last raise is BS! How about 15th year? How about lowering the max out from 29 years down to 25-26 years? The mayor can make it happen if he wants. More vacation days, P-days etc. How about the 10Hr day for everyone? Only the 005th district isn't fair. How about lift residency once you have 10-15 or 20 years on? Ask for the world FOP. What do you have to lose? Let It go to arbitration. don't let it effect your ego. Put it all on the table so the arbitrator can rule on it.

We should stop receiving healthcare from the City. We have enough active members of FOP (including dependents and retirees), that we should be providing health care for all our members to ourselves. The last contact I asked the FOP rep that that attended roll call about provided our own healthcare and he said it illegal under City law (bulls***). Let us provide our own healthcare, and remove the City. The City receives a rebate every year from the healthcare providers, but instead of cutting costs to members, the City places it into the general fund. I would like to know how much the City puts back into the general fund instead of spending that money on the members of CPD to reduce our healthcare cost. Everyone who retires should have free health care for life. We might have to pay more every check, but we will all be there some day. We had free healthcare in the mid 80’s for retires, but negotiated it away for a better raise for active members. We cannot make that same again with what the City wants to do with discipline. If the City had its way it will be like pre-1981 again.

Hell, I'll give them 1/2% a year on top of whatever percent it'll cost me for insurance. I want off this fucked up ride after giving more than half my life to this place. Should be an easy thing to add to the negotiating wishlist and convince the city to agree to seeing that they're hiring 1,000 new officers. Right? Riiggghhhhttttt?????

Vote no!

Demand that pension pay out be based on the last year worked in grade, PERIOD!!! Not averaged out of the last 4 years out of the last 10 years. There is no reason to average your pay over the last for years you worked. If you are anything above D-1 your pension pay out will be based on your current salaried position until you make Sgt and then you are in a different union. Let the Sgt and Lt union demand pension based on last year worked, not your worry. I believe this one issue would coalesce cops into a voting block that all can agree on since the pension pay out affects everyone.

Donahue screwed all the cops when he let Shortshanks off the hook for $20 million in return for 29 years and a day, with no chance of ever seeing 80% pension like other city and state workers.

SCC, we need a (another) post discussing residency.

I have 7 years to go before I hang it up but I'm pro-residency. If you want to live in the city then live in the city, if you don't need want to you should have the choice to not have to live here. That's how it is in the majority of departments around the country. This is America for Christs sake, we should be able to live where we want.

This kind of issue drives coppers apart mostly because of falling home property value. It was the same argument Philly coppers had in 2012.

Money blinds a lot of Cops when the concept of "back pay" comes up. Please set aside U'r myopic lenses and familiarize yourselves with how these contract negotiations actually work. Policing is changing so drastically that the POs with less then 5 should consider a more prudent option for Law Enforcement.
It's been said before and when I was in my twenties I wouldn't let my thick skull absorb this. This job is most certainly not the job it once was. Remember around the Ten year mark U may be married with children. The Department will have U in an indentured position by then meaning U will belong to an Employer that single handedly will own U and yours till retirement which is too long of a sentence under the scrutiny police will be forced to endure.
When the order came out about dropping a dime on Ur Partner going forward that's not a joke. We all have seen coppers that will do anything to get on the good side of a person wearing white. Don't swing at a pitch in the dirt. The City loves to throw curve balls. Sit back, wait, and don't fall for money already owed to U. Wait on that City Curve and make The City finally pay. From 2002 on The City has owned Us contractually. Please, Coppers, come together like listening to US99 after U'r first divorce. Be like Kenny during this contract by being that Hillbilly Rockstar that's out of control

FOP must ask for ALL accumulated comp. time to be paid to officers that are terminated, not just the hours over 170 accumulated in a 28 day period. FOP was negligent in their agreement with the City on this matter.. My time was earned, not given. Therefore it is mine; terminated or not. In this current witch hunt, the possibility of being terminated is very high, as is the risk of losing a huge chunk of your comp. time. FOP, right this wrong!!! Get the City to agree to this in the upcoming contract. I encourage every PO to call the FOP and demand this change. The potential financial loss on this alone is huge. I will continue to harp on this matter until the language in the contract states what I've just requested.

A detective came around last contract trying to push us towards voting yes for the contract and I brought up the issue of contraction. His response was "we got compression last contract." I told him that not only were people previously not going to stay for 34 years to max out the last step raise for the pension, but nobody wants to stay 29 years to max out the last step raise at 25 years. Obviously there was no response from him regarding the lodge putting forth any effort to achieve this benefit. His lack of response gave the impression that the lodge never even attempted to achieve anything related to the subject. Which departments besides cpd hit their last step raise at 25 years? It was my understanding that most were topped out by 18-20 years.

The Fop can foia merit picks. You don't negotiate for them. If the city gives you anything you ask for then they expect something in return. Asking for them to show merit picks as a negotiated item is moronic. If people weren't lazy they would go to 35th and take 10 minutes to files the foia. Remember, if it is bargained for then they want something in return. Is anything worth giving up because you want them to release merit picks?? Just shows how out of touch people really are. Also it's not the young guys. You have to worry about selling their soul for retro and pay raises. It's the old guys who have 5 years or less. On. They are leaving and would sell their souls for a penny more if they could. They aren't sticking around anymore so why should they. Care about anything else except money. Think scc....

A well known negotiation tactic is the usage of time.After time,the retro check amount builds.The mayor,who has the final say on wages already knows what he will give on that.They will wear you out with time used as a stick and dangle the carrot in front of you.The wife of one of a city employee mentioned that she was hoping that the contract would be settled soon because the family needed a new refrigerator and a new couch and bathroom upgrade.When I heard that,I realized that that was possibly the other stick.While the employee was waiting for the contract to be settled,so was the significant other.Money does strange things to people.It is what negotiations are really about.If the city let you leave without any raise at all,the amount that would be saved by leaving would probably exceed any pay raise.

With a Conservative Estimate being 20% to 30% of new hires coming from outside of the City, in some cases outside of the country; the issue of Residency must be considered an item, that if you will recall, was something Rahm teased us with when he first ran. Or, some special consideration for admission to the Elite public schools, that politicians use their clout to get their kids into. If you have kids and comply with the Residency Requirement, you are going to take a $12,000 a year hit when the kids reach high school. Now I realize that those of you living in Garcia Ridge and the Republic of Mt. Greenwood figure that there will be an Exodus from the city and your property will take a hit, if the Residency is ended. But then again, there is probably someone in a Third World Shithole, dreaming of wading in that plastic pool, in your concrete yard. So your house is marketable! Fu&k Rahm Baby"G"

Anyway, the big issue is going to be reducing your Rights and protections under the contract. Money should take a back seat to all of this.

Reducing police officers rights is a leftist BLM Democratic agenda and not recognized by the mainstream police departments in the rest of the country. To even consider altering police officers rights is a huge mistake because you're buying into their bullshit. Money and the cost to live in this city should our number 1 priority and increased protections for police officers should be our second priority.

Posting of merit picks was brought up at a meeting sometime in the spring and it did not seem to get a good reception for some reason, both from the board and those in attendance. Board stating something along the lines that the city will just not provide the list to the lodge. The PO that brought it up was just asking to have the rank order list which is provided to the lodge to be posted on the secure side of the website. He wanted it done for every tested PO position (ET,marine, bomb and arson, detective, Sgt., etc) Lt and above would not be included because they are not POs taking the test they are sgts. This way when classes are put in you can see who made it off their score. Local 2 provides this information to its members so should we.

personal opinion: no retires should run for office plain and simple. look what we have now. angelo has no clue what a beat officer has to content with in today's environment When was the last time he actually worked a beat car? no retires should be able to vote on a contract. the contract should be for working police officers. there is a organization for retiree's already in place, it is called the Chicago Police Retirement Association. this organization should be recognized by the city as a bargaining unit for all retiree's benefits.

The city never took a pension Holiday with the police pension fund. They just ignored the actuarials recommendation for the past 30 years and contributed the state mandated minium, $2 for every $1 we contribute. In 2011 there was a huge push to get our pension funded properly and the FOP was successful in getting legislation passed that forced the city to comply with the acturials prescribed increase that would have put our pension fund at 90% funded by the year 2040. The city has been trying to introduce legislation since this bill became law to defeat it and kick the can further down the road. Well Dean Angelo helped the city pass SB777 which negated all of the previous legislation the FOP fought for and with the new legislation our pension fund will be 34% funded in the year 2040 and will not be 90% funded until 2060 or 2065 that will cost taxpayers an additional 20 BILLION Dollars. . We had the city where we wanted them, forcing them to pay their pension obligations and you let them off the hook. Way to go Dean, you're a friggin idiot

We should stop receiving healthcare from the City. We have enough active members of FOP (including dependents and retirees), that we should be providing health care for all our members to ourselves.

The only way this would work is if the city paid us what they claim they are paying for our health benefits now. In either Pittsburgh or Philly, about 20 years ago the city said they needed a larger contribution from the members for healthcare because healthcare cost were increasing by double digits. The union said ok if you give us the $5K per member you are claiming to pay now we will relieve you of your healthcare obligation and just require a 1% increase each year. The city agreed and the union now provides one of the best healthcare plans in the country, retirees included. The key is the city needs to make the payment for the benefit for every officer to the union and this will never happen because it would eliminate hundreds of patronage jobs at city hall.

With all the attacks on LE lately, if the FLOP plays its cards right we just might win it this time. It has been overturned on federal court many times before. Hell I'd give up retro and a change to our medical system in a heart beat for that trade off, most po's abuse the medical system anyway!

I know what you mean. I had a case in front of the board along with my 800hrs comp time. I was lucky back then. Today, forget it. I don't know what the logic is to not be able to sell your hours if your fired.

Reducing merit is absolutely necessary and will go a long way to eliminating some of the unqualified bosses that lead to sooo many of our departments problems. 30% merit for sergeants is insanity. Merit serves a purpose if used properly for guys that actually accomplished things but maybe don't test well. Guys can still know the job and be good leaders but keep it to 10% or compromise to 15%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Residency rules are part of the Chicago Municipal Code section 2-152-340.
These apply to ALL city employee's.
These have been upheld under numerous cases by the State Supreme Ct.
You are never going to get this change.
Accept it and move on.
And the FOP is useless when it comes to fighting things like residency and challenging why we have to register ALL guns we own when the average citizen in Chicago is no longer required to do this. It's totally understandable to register guns that an officer will be carrying on and off duty, but hunting, sporting, and collectible guns are really none of the department's business. This would be easy to challenge but the FOP does nothing. Residency would be worth the challenge too, but most of the FOP hierarchy are simply worried about the value of their own homes instead of what most of the rank and file want. Every major city except Chicago has dumped the residency. The FOP could try to come up with some type of compromise regarding residency but they simply won't do it. There should be a rule in place that after 10 or 15 years on the job, an officer can have the option to move out of Chicago. And also give new officers at least 6 or 12 months to get in instead of this 2 week bullshit. I will say that the current FOP staff has really projected that they are useless. Hopefully something changes for the better when the next election comes around, because we need FOP leadership in the anti-police climate of Chicago.
On the issue of residency.
Don't ask the FOP to negotiate with the City over this matter. Let's not negotiate on what we believe is unconstitutional. If it bothers you enough, hire your own attorney to sue the State and City for violating your constitutional right. Send the matter to the U. S. Supreme Court. Start your own push for this. Can you get several POs in your district to financially commit to this cause? Have them reach deep into their pockets for attorney fees. Select a top law firm. Be transparent. As the lawsuit gains traction and legal fees pile, sympathizers may be more willing to donate money. How about a GoFundMe account? Point being, WE (each and everyone one of us) can lead the charge on this matter. We don't need the State, City or Fop. Take it straight to the U.S. Supreme Court to settle once and for all!!
request extra time off , what happened to combat pay for officers assigned to the busiest districts , get rid of duty availability and get a real shift differential
5% for 3rd watch and 7% for 1st watch
f the daytime dollies with straight days weekends off
make it pensionable and you will have some police officers with experience to sloww up the youngsters on 1st and 3rd watch
also will open up second watch for younger officers
Healthcare! Healthcare! Healthcare! Dean is not the one we want negotiating this next contract. Just look at his past history in opening the door and giving away our healthcare benefits:
2001- Dean allowed the City to change the healthcare contributions from a flat rate to a percentage of our salaries. Now the city gets a raise in healthcare contributions overtime we get a raise.
2014- Dean gave away the free insurance at 55 starting on Jun 1st 2017. This was done after his next election so that we wouldn't notice. Now its 2% of our pension and the city will be asking to raise this every single contract in the future.
2014- Starting Jan 1, 2017 there is now Co-pays for the PPO insurance for the first time ever.
2014- Starting Jan 1, 2017 there is a extra tier in the PPO. If you want to go to an Advocate Hospital or Northwestern our portion of the bill will be more than twice what it was in 2016.
Lets make sure Dean doesn't give away any more of our health insurance benefits!
I always thought a yearly bonus should be included in all ccntracts for crime reduction. This would be on top of salary. Make it like an athletes contract. If certain milestones are reached, you make more money. It could give more incentive for Police Officers to deter crime and Detectives to solve crime. Just a thought. I know there are potential issues and it would have to be done on a member by member basis which could be very difficult to determine. Or it could just be a blanket bonus, if violent crime is reduced by (x) then contract will pay (y) additional percentage that year.
Why on earth would you "want" residency? You want someone to tell you where you can live? You are sheep. The state law on residency can be changed. Laws are added, deleted and changed every year. You are a police officer, you don't know that? Wisconsin had their residency changed a few years ago and the officers and the union weren't worried about home values or the strength of neighborhoods. But officers here in Chicago are small thinkers.
Don't think that we have to give up something to get residency lifted. Milwaukee had the state Supreme Court abolish it. They didn't lose anything. The unions just had to want it changed. Our unions don't. Makes me wonder, what's in it for them.
Yeah, every other department in the country got residency lifted. But we are so much smarter in Chicago that some of us actually think WE are better off with it. If you are so worried about keeping Chicago neighborhoods strong, why don't you give up some salary and benefits, too. The city can use the extra money. Rahm loves control and he's got control on everything you do, even where you live.
DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR RIGHTS FOR MONEY! Demand that the residency rule be lifted (after all we the police are racist evil bastards and the problem here in Chicago). Give those who wish to keep their 606 area code a tax break. Any changes that affect your constitutional/employee rights should be a NO! Severely reduce the amount of management options for watch bids. Allow vacancy bids per month no matter how much it shorts the ghetto districts (the city's inability to fill vacancies shouldn't be our problem). Merit promotions reduced, make a minimum qualifications list for merit promotions, post names of who are going to be selected and why they are chosen for merit. We have way more issues that need to be addressed this contract than money, don't fall for their bullshit.
Furlough by watch was done by the city so that they could chip away at duty availability pay. Don't be surprised if that disappears for everyone except for tact and certain units. District should not have to move people around to watches due to shortages anymore (i.e. shortage of POs on 2nd watch during summer because they usually have the most seniority and would get the summer furloughs by seniority)
furlough selection by watch was done to ensure manpower shortages were evenly distributed among watches. So no need for watch changes among members and eventually no justification for duty availability.
Furlough by watch has to go, screws everyone with 10-18 years on.
Let's be more clear. It screws people on days with 10-18 years on. I have 13 years on and work on 3rd watch and I went from usually getting a 4b 11a to now getting a 7b 13b this year. We can keep this way of picking forever. It's not my fault you got the days management spot. If you want days so bad with less than 20 years on then you gotta pay a little price. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want a better furlough then come to afternoons.. and don't give me the sob story of how you have kids and schedules to keep with your wife etc... this is a department of almost 13 thousand people. We all have lives, kids and are married and have to do things so you saying how you need days so bad on management gets absolutely no sympathy from anyone on this job. You can't be so entitled to have it all, let the other guys get a little peek too.. and just so we are clear, if you took time to go to recent Fop meetings furlough by watch will not be negotiated by the lodge on this contract per the negotiating team, for the time being it is here to stay.
Sell the house now.....move the family to the real promised land, outside the city....get your apartment to keep your job....spend a few nights a week in the apartment...and enjoy ! Take whatever your paying for rent off the top of your salary and you're still making good money.
You are an idiot! You knew the rules when you took the job. Give up medical? I'm glad you are young and healthy, but wait till you have a heart attack, or cancer, or twist an ankle or knee, or in an accident off-duty and need the medical. Do you want to lose money because you gave away the medical and got in a crash in your new suburban neighborhood? Using the medical because you are sick is not "abuse" but is a necessity to be able to recover and return to duty. Do people abuse it? Sure. Don't give up the medical in return for removing the residency. Find something else to bargain with.
80/20 plan like many other large cities, or get out at 25 years with top step pay(29 years and a day is ridiculous, even more so with current anti-police climate) should be priority. Next not giving up any healthcare benefits. Also not giving up any legal protections, or being told how to police by the ACLU, DOJ, and BLM to kowtow to politicians, activists, media. Residency is our best bargaining chip and all the Mayors past, present & future will never let CPD/CFD out of it. Chiraq would devolve into Detroit in one year if it's lifted, and Then deteriorate further and transform into the Congo circa 1961 after two years.
Gotta be smart and look at the long game...Retro Check, furlo picks/watch, who is merit are all backburner items that can wait. Like someone pointed out already Retro isbasically us paying ourselves a lump sum from our work...paid by City by sitting on interest and deliberate bad faith negotiation/delay tactics. Need to get out of this totally Fucked profession alive, earlier with more money(i.e. our constitutionally guaranteed Pension) and our healthcare. Get out and move away from this shithole and enjoy the rest of your lives. When we are retired somewhere sunny on the golf course with a cold beer in hand we can get on laptop and SCC will let us know who is or was a Merit pick, and who their Rabbi was...Peace & Hairgrease!
Anyone who thinks giving up medical for ANY benefit thats on the table, ie: retro, residency, merit picks, ect. is a complete ass. One catastophic injury off duty and you could be wiped out. THINK before we give up something so precious as medical. YOU could be next to be off for an extended injury/ilness and its so nice to know while you recover that the checks keep coming.
Fop listen. First comp time be senority drop that. And my reason is simple. I earned that time I should b able to use it. 012 dis. Merged failure. Lost over 200 people, not replaced. I'm on midnight we have 60 people on the watch. In order to get 15 percent off 5 car's have to be downed every night. Get rid of 15 percent. That works in district like 11 that have over 400 people. There 15 percent maybe 10 people off. We r only getting 1 person off a night. Cu by senority makes no sense, when pdays are. Give every cop a chance to get off. Guys with under 8 years can't get time off. Never had these issues until comp time by senority. Furlos by watch dump it. Again I have 19 years on, if I try for days in 012 first I won't get it but if I could the best furlo I could get is a full 3. Go back to how it was for 16 years I worked. And please save the hey u r in 012 speech. It's not the same 12 everyone thinks. We suffered enough, merger, staples, bubblehead. Please just listen to what the guys want.
To the comments about lifting residency......That sounds great on paper......Only problem...the house that you spent 200k, 300k , or 400k for in the city....will be worth a fraction of that ! Especially in the northwest side and south side city worker neighborhoods. And good luck even selling it ! Who the hell would buy it ?
Sell the house now.....move the family to the real promised land, outside the city....get your apartment to keep your job....spend a few nights a week in the apartment...and enjoy ! Take whatever your paying for rent off the top of your salary and you're still making good money.
And btw..... As Sgt with 21 + years....fuck this place.
*****************************************************************************************
You guys all crack me up with the residency comments. There's going to be no mass exodus and your house will not plummet in value if the city allows you to live in Oak Lawn or any other suburb. I've been CPD for almost 20 years now and a home inspector for 15 years. Do you know how many people live in the city that DON'T work for the city? Plenty. I often do home inspections for non-city workers in MT Greenwood and Beverly. You guys are douchebags with this line of thinking. First off most you are from the city and lived here before you got on and didn't move away before you became CPD when you had the chance. How many of you are from Kentucky? Minnesota? Florida? Right. Most are from this city and most will retire here so quit your damn whining that the property values will go in the toilet if your cop neighbor moves out to Chicago Ridge. I bet 10% even consider moving if residency got lifted and guess what? Your cop neighbor moves out? Another city worker will buy the house. Someone who does not want to drive in from Plano everyday. Geez.
"Furlough by watch has to go, screws everyone with 10-18 years on."
Go to midnights then. You'll get the best furlough.
This idea of fucking the city to the point it fails is just mind-boggling. I get it the city has fucked us in many instances and they are still trying to fuck us and probably will try to really fuck us this upcoming contract with all the liberal BS that's spewing since "hands up, don't shoot" but the city still pays our salaries and is our current way of making a living and our ticket to retirement. The property values need to go up for our own benefit. What good does it do us if the city ACTUALLY ends up like Detroit. I have no qualms about making the city pay their share, making sure we get our health care, our pension and get everything we deserve...but if the city has no money to do that you don't get anything. It's like betting against your own horse in a race.
Most of those that don't want to fight residency are people that haven't moved out of their parents homes. There's more out there and much nicer areas. And why do you want to be told where you can live
Do NOT give up your criminal and legal protections for residency.
Do NOT give up your medical benefits for residency.
You'll NEVER get them back.
And BTW,the suburbs aren't all in the promised land. Suburban real estate taxes aren't any cheaper,unless you are a few counties away.
Lake and Du Page county taxes are more than Cook. Unless you live in a shithole.
Well I rarely post on here for obvious reasons and I rarely read the comments because theyre just aggravating. I do read the posts just to see what's going on or for some comic relief occasionally. That said, I learned one thing today by making the mistake of reading the comments section. We're fucked!! You know why? Not because of the city and not because of anyone but ourselves. If the city reads this(I'm 99.9% some command staff and someone from management and labor affairs does) they must be loving it. Looking at how divided we are and how childish some are. They have already divided and conquered. Old coppers ripping young coppers and young guys ripping old timers, white shirts vs blue shirts, college grads vs non college grads, guys ripping on certain neighborhoods and saying well "too bad if you overpaid for your house, you're stupid" Wtf is wrong with us? THIS is WHY we lose our ass come contract time. We're so divided and everyone wants something different. What are we going to have like 6 candidates running for FOP? Soon they will be coming to roll calls telling us why they're the best and why the other guys suck. More coppers ripping on other coppers. I understand we're all different and that's human nature but the bottom line is we all want, or at the very least, NEED, the same things in regards to this job. Some of us are lucky enough to be in good districts or units, some were lucky enough to bid(me) to good districts , some are stuck in shitty spots with no way out because there's not enough open spots to bid to, some have phone calls and use them(everyone would if they had it so stop bullshitting). It's time we all put our big boy pants on and get ready for what's about to come at contract time. It won't be pretty and we're not going to get everything we want. It doesn't mean we can't ask and it doesn't mean whoever we do elect as president didn't try. You win some and you lose some, but if we go into this as divided as we are now I GUARANTEE we're screwed because instead of sticking together we will be divided by who we voted for. Vote for whoever YOU believe will represent us the best, not because he's your buddy or because you think he's a nice guy or because you think he will hook you up with something. Vote for the guy that really seems like he will get the job done. I have no idea who that is for me personally but I will listen to what all have to say and make my own determination. My choice may differ from yours and yours from mine. Doesn't make me an asshole and doesn't make you stupid. Let's stick together for once. That's the end of my rant for now. Stay safe everyone and back each other up. I will also leave my name to this post because I think anonymously talking shit is for pussies.......Mike Walsh 018
What is all this repeated talk about residency??? Look around EVERY neighborhood in the city... how many cops actually live in Any?? I'm in EP and although saturated with cops and other city workers, the MAJORITIES on my block, friends and family's block are NOT city workers... Do you all think that lifting residency will cause a mass exodus out of the city?? Where will you go?? All the western suburbs are getting taken over by pookie anyway, southern burbs look like a little Middle East... No thanks! How many cops live in $2000+/month RENT in Lincoln park or west loop? These are areas that are filled with people who don't HAVE to live in the city, yet do. I know plenty of retired cops/city workers in my are that could've split town years ago but have no plans to leave. This "mass exodus" is the same Chicken little BS like those who say "get out of the city, it's the next Detroit"...as new pricey buildings are going up everyday and companies are relocating into the city. Just because you didn't see the writing on the wall and bought in a soon-to-be shitty area, don't think that EVERYONE in the city would give away their house as soon as they lifted residency. It may be wrong and I agree we SHOULD be able to live wherever we want, but it's not a priority for those who made wise decisions.
To the beat off cops yelling " you knew the rules for residency when you were hired" that is a dumb a statement . Residency now , via law suit .
No one talks about adequately funding the pension. Start by eliminating the Gold Stars drawing pensions based on their exempt pay.
You need to start thinking like a Union and less like a Fraternal Organization other city worker pensions have already come under fire and your deluded in thinking Police and Fire are sacred cows. Them today you tomorrow, count on it and start planning accordingly.
Keep health costs down , shift differential. Not duty availability is the way to go , 5% for 3rd watch ,8% for 1st watch pensionable . A way to get old timers off 2nd Watch . End the Medical Abusers . From day one , every police officer has a medical bank of 365 days , that will cover 90% of Police Officers . Negotiate with CPD Memorial to assist Police Officers on a extended mediacsl that did not abuse the system .
Remember if you need more than the one year the pension will give you 50% disability . Save pension , end gold braid and duty disability for police officers that can walk,talk,drive ,vacation ,work other jobs while on disability . Many full duty officers are assigned to clerical duties .
