It isn't just Chicago that's seeing a largish number of cops leaving - NYPD is a prime example:
- Is the Big Apple about to witness an exodus of cops from the force? That's what The New York Post is asking after reporting that nearly 600 of the city's boys in blue nearing retirement age have signed up for a pension seminar next week — four times the number who normally sign up by this point:
The Tuesday event for members of the officers, sergeants and detectives unions will be held in Queens Village and feature retirement advice from Joe Maccone, former commanding officer of the NYPD’s pension section. The venue holds 700, and organizers fear they will be forced to turn some people away at the doors.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association said that typically about 150 cops RSVP in the week before the event, and the record number of reservations points to a looming exodus of veteran officers.
The union blames the increased interest in the retirement seminar on job dissatisfaction, including low pay and low morale.
The NYPD did have a spike in hiring from 1,593 to 2,418 between 1996 and 1997 — and cops can retire with full pensions after 20 years.
But PBA officials said RSVPs had never before surged like this — even when the event fell 20 years after a similar peak in hiring.
And hiring is getting more and more difficult. No one staying and no one coming in? We sense much lawlessness in the near future.

I don't blame them for getting out. Life is too short to be in a job where they hate you for doing your job.

It's a shame that we don't have a diligent pension board and a union like our colleagues in New York. Remember when the new anti police mayor tried to make an appearance at an Officer's LOD funeral and officers up to the rank of Captain turned their backs on him? Now that's solidarity!

Law Enforcement is not a desirable job anymore. At least New York doesn't have forced residency. If Chicago wants to attract more applicants they better lift residency. Anyone outside Chicago considering law enforcement may go elsewhere to avoid Chicago's antiquated residency requirement.
Democrats and Communists have caused this. Nobody can blame them. It is also a good thing to show that Liberal Democrat is FAILED!

You sir are entirely correct. I've said this for a long time. The "solidarity" on this job is nothing but a mirage. Go to any CPD coppers in the line of duty death funeral and look at the turn out by other coppers. Disgusting. There should be thousands. And I'm talking 5K at a minimum. Instead there are usually at best, 1 to 1.5 k. I've brought this up at roll calls and there is always an excuse as to why they couldn't attend the funeral of a copper killed in the line of duty. I had to watch the kids, I had to work my side job, yada,yada,yada. Always an excuse.
Look at the recent controversy over working special employment during the Labor Day weekend when the union asked coppers not to sign up for special employment. You actually had coppers come on this board and give everyone a big "fuck you" by saying they were going to work no matter what. It's all about me with a substantial number of these guys.
The Mayor counts on this division between the Officers. It is how he is able to shit all over the CPD. And it's not just Rahm. It's been going on for years, even before him. Is anyone here or on the CPD foolish enough to think that Rahm would get away with doing to the teachers what he does to the CPD? Has he ever thrown the teachers or the CTU under the bus the way he has the CPD or individual coppers? Think he would ever say the teachers are "fetal"? Look at the CTU. How are they able to get what they want? It is because they show unity and they have strong union leadership,hate Lewis or not. And until the rank and file of the CPD take a page from that union and start showing some unity, nothing will change.
I have 10 years on and I'm looking for a career change. Just don't want to do it anymore, why should I bust my ass working in the ghetto for an ungrateful population. I would still be the police if I could get to a district that needs and appreciates the job we do. By the time I can get to one of those districts I'll be ready to retire.

A lot of NYPD are bailing out for the surrounding areas. Smaller, quieter communities.

Our Retirement Seminar, (the always overcrowded sales pitch event) had all openings filled by March 2016 for the only 3 they offered this year. Don't even ask about parking in the lot.
No, they won't take walk-ins, even if it's your day off or on 1st or 3rd watch.
Who was the dipshit who plans these? Nobody, not even the egghead merit exempt seen a huge retirement coming ? Wow!
Luckily I went back in 2012, even then it was over crowded but it was a waste of time. They had to breeze through the important stuff like Insurance, Def comp, and the basic retirement process, just get to the lawyers & accountants trying to sign up clientele for wills, ira's, financial plans, etc.
So, you're better off asking around others who already went or retired, or go to a small group FOP/Credit Union informational seminar.
The Department is a failure.
What about those ACLU assholes that seem to have everything figured out? You know, their great idea about them handling the "minor calls" that really don't need police officers? And what ever happened to CeaseFire? And the millions of dollars that the Rahm-hole gave them, that disappeared along with those asshole ex-cons? All those great ideas and lots of money thrown away, that the City doesn't have to spend in the first place, gone!

Actually there are many small cities and sheriff's departments out there where cops are respected and appreciated. The cops in my community get along well with everyone, except the criminal types. The community likes and supports it's police officers.
Is this leftist misdirection and propaganda? The NYPD is supposed to be the premier of large city police forces. The best in world, with the highest morale. How can this be?

The problem coming up is not the hiring numbers, but the person being hired. Years ago people wanted to be the police. Now they just want a job with benefits and don't give a rat's ass about performing the job honorably. No bosses with any nuts. Long hair, braided hair, hoop earrings, 5 rings, bracelets, not wearing their hat because it will mess up their doos, fu manchu mustaches, beards, soul patches, backward baseball caps, fingernails 2" long, etc etc....items that can be corrected by having supervisors doing their jobs. Even they are on the job just to collect a check. I'm gone and bitter, because I tried to do the job the right way along with many others, but also saw the trend changing of mismanagement, and fear to supervise.
Its over, policing is scraping the bottom, people that cannot get a better job will take this job temporarily get the free education and move on! Cousin working at academy giving out lie detector tests had a kid a M/2 walk in look at him throw his paperwork down and says "I don't want this fu**ing job" turned and walked out! This started in washington with barry obamas comment that police acted "stupidly" (Shows his education level), and the disease went all the way, to ruin police moral the 24/7 media blitz attacking police is working! Even the FBI director said "police are fetal" with the ferguson affect, true no one wants to be the next media darling and lose everything! Your correct look at some of the recruits and coppers with no time on, blame the bosses also but then again we have no management that gets any respect as "respect is earned not given" and they don't earn it! I have 31 years on the job. I've been to two retirement seminars. Really have no desire to retire. I just like the fried chicken and pasta salad they serve there.
The job is changing. They're slowly phasing out our cruisers and bringing in SUV's. I miss the old crown vics with the single blue bubble. One-Adam 12 old me down for a Folo's Beef.

You're not alone. Remember all the coppers a few years ago on here calling officers dogs for not working? Well guess where those officers are.... prison, about to go to prison, or shitcanned because they violated someone's civil rights.

I agree with you as far as police officers attending services for officers killed in the line of duty. The turnout should be overwhelming.
However, as to the mayor being able to shit all over the department while kissing teachers asses, I have to disagree.
The reason is that the teachers will go on strike, and especially now they know that they have this asshole over a barrel as he is going to run for another term and he cannot have them fucking up his plans. There would be too much negative publicity and he is still reeling over hiding the video of the m'fkr who was justifiably shot by JVD.
So what would happen if cops strike? The city don't hold their pension obligations or medical for retirees. The city makes & breaks deals all the time without respect for police life's. Let's declare a day to strike! Screw the doj, ACLU, the exempts, 50 thiefs, & rahm.

I had 13 years on the job a and left this summer. Never been happier. Just couldn't stand the all surrounding bullshit anymore.
