Because if he order to double up officers they are running with 2 cars per sector on days. Burglaries and thefts are through the roof and 6 cars patrol the entire district. The tact teams are being detailed out every weekend for one BS event or another. Then the tact team is so short that they have to get officers from the watch to fill in leaving the watch even shorter. They have tons of manpower in these ghetto districts but they keep stripping 016 because there is less crime. It won't be that way long. Call your alderman and complain

If you google Citizens on Patrol it appears to be a nationwide program in various cities including Berwyn. Some sort of an eyes and ears on the street force multiplier. Some cities even issue a ticket book and the patrol volunteers issue citations. I guess the snitches get stitches program isn't in effect in those jurisdictions.

The Berwyn Police Department in its continuing efforts to provide public safety and to enhance the public’s knowledge and awareness of the criminal justice system, will be hosting a twelve (12) week Citizens' Police Academy. This program is not designed to make students certified police officers, nor give the graduates any authority to act as police officers in any way.

The Citizens' Police Academy provides community members with an inside look at local law enforcement. The purpose of the academy is to increase understanding between the citizens through education and interaction with members of the police department. It gives citizens the opportunity to learn what the police do and why it is done. It is hoped that the instruction will increase police awareness to dispel suspicions and misconceptions, all while increasing police/community relations through this educational program.

The academy consists of twelve (12) consecutive Wednesday night classes; these will be held in the Community Room of the Berwyn Police Department from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. The instruction is comprehensive and each week separate areas of the department will be covered. Instruction will be given in: Uniformed Patrol Operations, Criminal Law, Criminal Investigations, Juvenile Law, Crime Scene Investigations and Processing, Arson Investigation, Traffic Laws, Weapons & Use of Force, Street Gang and Drug Awareness. In addition, other areas of public safety will be presented. Members of the Berwyn Police and Fire Departments will be the instructors of the program. The course format will include guest speakers, demonstrations and observations of real time police operations. At the conclusion of the twelve (12) week program there will be a graduation for the candidates who will become an alumni member and have an opportunity to take part in periodic in-service lessons and activities.

Criminal background checks will be conducted on all applicants. Applicants must be Berwyn residents, at least twenty-one (21) years of age, and have no prior felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests in the last twelve (12) months.

Acceptance into the program will be at the full discretion of the Berwyn Police Department. Any questions regarding the Citizens' Police Academy, please contact Unit Commander Frank Cimaglia at 708-795-5600 ext. 3150.

Sounds a lot like they are trying to replace the police in Berwyn or quite possibly create a bunch of street lawyers. We need to start eliminating politicians who want to change the fabric of our country and run it into the ground.

10:34 hrs. - If properly conducted - the Citizens Police Academy can be an asset. Several suburbs conduct them and it is like the Police Explorer program for adults. One of my more affluent friends took the course in Lake Forest. He had the usual stereotype ideas about police until he took the course. Talk about a change for the better. A Pro Police citizen thru and thru. He even offered to pay his employees to take the course if their town offered one. He also decided to have the Fire Dept. conduct CPR training for his staff.
And if you are a fan of AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio - he actually has a sworn Sheriif's Possee, armed/trained/uniformed who serve as peace officers on a volunteer basis.
As Sir Robert Peele said, "Where the Police are citizens & the citizens are the Police."
Too bad most of our peoples & folks don't act like citizens.

Why is it that area pays dearly in taxes but yet police strength the little we have is concentrated in the thug ghetto areas stripping the taxpaying areas of services paid for? Why are the residents not up in arms marching on city hall? I know the answer they are working to pay the bills and pay the taxes unlike the link card illegal invaders who just take the money and cause total mayhem!
