Interesting Proposal

  • Chicago would offer homeowners a $200 rebate to purchase exterior cameras as long as they also link the cameras to the city’s vast video surveillance network. The innovative plan is being championed by a rookie alderman to combat the never-ending cycle of gang violence.

Instead of spending $27,000 of his $1.32 million annual allotment of aldermanic menu money for just one crime-fighting street camera, rookie Ald. Ray Lopez (15th) wants to stretch those funds by offering the rebate as an incentive to homeowners.
Inviting the government into your surveillance system?

Not high on our list of priorities.

Being a good citizen and letting the cops know if your cameras happen to catch someone or something that might help solve a criminal matter?

Better option and it appeals to a sense of civic duty, especially in crime-ridden neighborhoods.

In the article though, there is an amusing admission by the aldercreature:
  • Lopez acknowledged Thursday that what Chicago really needs is more police officers to stop the surge in homicides and shootings that will only get worse during the warm summer months.
We're shorthanded? Weather affects crime? Wow, this guy has got it on the ball!

You have to be kidding me...

Do we really want the city to have control,or access to cameras on our neighbors houses??

Im sure it will only be used to catch crimi als, and would Never be used to jam us up...

Wow - a Chicago alderman admitting to CPD staffing shortages and criminal activity being weather related? Nunc dimmitus!

Will he make the next earth-shattering revelation and point out that the morale of the rank and file is directly tied to the level of support from the admin and management crowd?

Nah . . .

Why cameras are ineffective, let me count the ways:

1) Who is monitoring ALL the cameras ALL the time? No one.

2) How many cameras are NOT functional (out-of-service)? For ANY reason.

3) Cameras cannot stop a crime in progress.

4) Cameras - UNLESS THEY ARE GOOD - do NOT give sufficient evidence to ID a person (or persons).

5) Cameras need to be properly maintained. Are yours? (General question to ALL camera owners - city, businesses, residential)

6) Cameras provide a FALSE sense of security - just like "No Gun" signs.

Here is a better proposition. Get rid of the Alderman and 29 other rubber-stamp colleagues, their ward funds, their staffs, and hire more REAL policemen.

I have called 311 for quality of life issues, loud parties late at night. No police ever came. Retired guy.

Oh-oh, Alder-Creature Lopez is gonna catch hell for this idea -- from his fellow Alder-creatures.

Lopez is actually trying to do something that would help Chicago -- actually doing work that one would, should, expect from your elected officials -- instead of just trying to line his pocket as is the SOP in the Den Of Thieves also known as, The Chicago City Council. His 'coworkers' sure as heck won't appreciate being upstaged by this newbie Alderman -- 'Just who the Hell does he think he is, Harrumph!

Not to mention that Tiny Dancer can't be overlooked in this plan. How can The Nine Digit Midget let this proceed without him being able to hand out no-bid contracts to his cronies for cameras or interfacing with the city's system.

Oh well, at least one elected official wants to try do something about the out of control Gang Violence. That's a start.

I don't give a fuck if they hired 10,000 20,000 30,000 more policeman with the way things are today I still ain't doing no police work
So fuck the people who run this city !!! Yea that means you MR alderman (all of you ) and you to Mr Mayor oh and you to Mr superintendent
Do you really believe that putting more coppers on the street really gonna change anything ? !!??! Your all fucking stupid if you do
I'll tell you what , put as many policeman as you want out there lets see what excuse your gonna come up with when that doesn't work
Your immediate problem is our pension your next problem is allowing police officers to do there jobs the way it's supposed to be done not the way you think it needs to be done to make your political career stronger then if you really love the city and care for the citizens the way you all stand up there and try to convince everybody of then while you're up there lying to the people let them know that they will be held responsible for their actions if they challenge the police then we will escalate our response if you lie about the police on a complaint then you will be held responsible for that action. That won't ever happen so I guess I'll keep collecting a check for doing nothing that's fine by me
I make a lot of money to do nothing and when they take that away then I'll leave but I only have a few more years to go and I'll be leaving anyway so at some level I have to thank the powers for giving a good excuse for not do shit I never liked the so called dogs but I have to say
It's not so bad

I know where this is going....

1.) They will require people in tax paying, "low crime" areas to purchase the cameras (from an approved vendor) for their homes.

2.) They will then subsidize or outright give cams to Englehoodians, Austinites, etc....

Police hiring is Job #1, Job #2 is stop the pandering to the black lies matter crew, the media, the revs when they do their illegal assembly nonsense lock them up, county jail has more "room at the inn" than any hotel in the world! Get the buses fill up the jail, use the law mayor, but on the bottom of all complaints you sign them, or whosoever ward it is in signs the complaints get out of the shadows cowards!

Now about that pesky police pension fund that will be broke in what 6 years where is that money at? Deceptive maybe? Agree with 1,2, maybe 5 - only with the contingency that the city ACTUALLY contributes, not defer payments. The rest, no fucking way! Many of us have given more than the best years of our lives serving this ungrateful shit pool. Being able to leave at 50 yrs of age is a necessity for those of us who have been on since early to mid 20s. No more of this raise the age limit for this or that bullshit. That's exactly what these fucking crooked tyrannical thieving politicians want - for you to die behind the wheel of a beat car! Life expectancy for the average officer after he retires is 5 fucking years, mostly due to the insane stress level of this job. This is young man's work, sorry but no country for old men here. Following your suggestion, the city better make those squad cars handicap accessible, because you'll have old crows wheeling themselves and using walkers getting to those domestics and mentals. If you want to stay in this 3 ring shit show till you drop, that's your business, and good luck. from the outside looking in I can tell you the city has no money to pay for 3500 new cops. ain't going to happen no matter what. That would add the better part of a half a billion dollars a year to the city budget. that money just does not exist.

the rest of it is just fiddling with the numbers and some of it has been ruled to be against the state constitution already.

take what you can get while you can because at some point the gravy train will derail. I don't have a clue what form that derailment will take. could be like Detroit where some city workers got a major trim while cops and firemen pretty much came out whole. Or it could just collapse when the police pension fund runs out of money if nothing is done to fix the problem.

The real issue has never been funding but that public employee pension plans of all kinds in this state are just not supportable at the current levels of both benefits and sheer number of employees covered. At some point that has to be addressed somehow.
