There Goes the Neighborhood
- Whites are moving back to the American city that came to epitomize white flight, even as blacks continue to leave for the suburbs and the city's overall population shrinks.
Detroit is the latest major city to see an influx of whites who may not find the suburbs as alluring as their parents and grandparents did in the last half of the 20th century. Unlike New York, San Francisco and many other cities that have seen the demographic shift, though, it's cheap housing and incentive programs that are partly fueling the regrowth of the Motor City's white population.
A social scientist might observe that these things run in cycles. If so, might we be seeing similar changes in Englewood, North Lawndale and other locations that have a recent history of pale populations?

All cities run in cycles. First, people live downtown, near the work and services. Then they move outward, away from the congestion, and less affluent people take their place. The rings of outward movement grow larger until they stop (due to long commutes, cost and inconvenience) and people at the outer fringe once again move to the city center, refresh and renew the area, drive the prices up, then they again begin the migration outward.
I believe he said it happens every generation, which was considered to be more than twenty but less than thirty years back then. Now, I'd guess a generation would be considered twenty years.
So, Detroit is right on target. And, considering the large amount of quality housing stock and solidly built warehouses and factories, it's one hell of a good investment if you're willing to be an urban pioneer for ten years.
After Hurricane Katrina (which Rahm and Nancy blamed on W. rather than the kleptocrats who failed to maintain the levees), the city of New Orleans actually saw white politicians elected to municipal offices for the first time in decades as many black voters moved away.
The 'burbs in Detroit are going to Hell now.....place like Redford Township, Livionia, and Dearborn are decaying.
Englewood is close to nothing , except Armageddon .
Once the residents have burned the possibly desirable neighborhood to the ground, investors will buy the property for cheap and then build and renovate the area and here come the "urban pioneers" to take over the area.
Yes, I am sure we'll be seeing some Starbucks opening up in Englewood as well as some other yuppie hangouts real soon.
When will the Sushi Bar be coming in? Or the Day Spa with the hot rocks treatment?
When will Coach, Brookstone, American Restoration, and other "fine retail" be opening up on 79th street?
It will probably be when low-income housing is built up on the North Shore in places like Lake Forest, Winnetka, and Glencoe ---- NEVER.

have you seen the property tax rates for Detroit. Housing may be dirt cheap, but the taxes are not.
On the bright side, some of the surviving houses have pretty good fields of fire. There is not another house on the entire block.
I have to call bullshit on this one and would love to know where that information came from. I know the government would never lie to make things seem better than they really are, so I have an alternative view to counter the number reliant propaganda of growth and prosperity in Detroit. My view is that white's really aren't moving in, but are buying things from a distance (like I did) and staying as far away as possible. On paper a white person has purchased a home in Detroit, providing a foundation for the fluffed phony numbers claiming white influx, but I am certainly not moving in. Regarding such change in say Englewood? Completely different demographic situation in that whites moving in would require those already there to relocate; say...to south Portage Park for example, ultimately spreading the shit out more and bringing down once prosperous neighborhoods. Or, maybe they are really moving in like the yuppies did in Albany Park as they bought up apartments now called condominiums just off the brown line. A diamond surrounded by total shit with porta potties and broken glass adorning the yard next door. Lying with numbers to cover the reality and fluff the truth is what I call the white influx in Detroit. How does that go?...nothing to see here, move along?

Let's all get together and "change!!!" Englewood, Chatham, and the rest of the bad neighborhoods one square mile at a time. We can get a group of respectable people together to all buy homes for one dollar and turn the lives around of faultering neighborhoods. In all seriousness, many of those " hoods" are marked by tree- lined streets, and homes with beautiful woodwork and artful brick design. We'll have strict rules such as no boom cars, bbq'ing in the front yard, litter, and and payday loan stores. Roaches will be dealt with swiftly, and will the money saved by the one dollar price tag, the gloom of pension payouts will not seem so insecure.

It's already happening on the westside. There are white people living in the heart of the ghetto at Kedzie/Walnut,California/Washington, all over. I would imagine it's the same out south.
I once stopped a young white couple and asked them.... why? They said that it was because housing is cheap there and as more and more white people move in it will get better. In the meantime they are willing to put up with the thugs sitting on the porches on each side of their homes. They can never sit on THEIR porch or even their back yard in the summertime. They send their kids to private schools miles away. They can't shop in their own neighborhoods, they have to go miles away.
Go figure.

Sorry, but it's true. Young people from Ann Arbor are moving to Detroit in big numbers. We're talking artists. programmers, telecommuters, 'urban farmers', hipsters.
It won't be you daddy's Detroit, but they're moving in big-time.

If enough of the inhabitants are gone, it may be a good thing as...OK maybe not. It may be an island in a vacant wasteland, but that will just mean that any protection by the police will be that much further away.

A city can't run on trendy little restaurants and "performance arts spaces." How many zillions of square feet of "murals by local artists" can you have on the walls of abandoned factories, where once worked tens of thousands of people? We went past saturation point with all that a long time ago...

Not to be racist but a realist I want to move where the first thing on the news is "black murder and mayhem" almost everyday tired of 10% of total population causing what 90% of felonious crimes? Cause and effect, government makes some think they cannot achieve so they and the 1% throw pieces of change at them and like goldfish they nip at it, realize it's not enough turn to criminal enterprises and get arrested short time in prison the cycle continues!
