Just a Quarter Million

  • There is a potential settlement more than 10 years after the death of David Koschman at the hands of a member of former Mayor Richard Daley’s family.

Koschman was 21 years old back in 2004 when he was punched in the face during a bar fight. He hit his head and died 11 days later.

Daley’s nephew, Richard Vanecko, who wasn’t charged until seven years after the incident, pleaded guilty to hitting Koschman and served 60 days in jail.

Koschman’s family says there was a cover-up in the case from the very beginning all because Vanecko was connected.

The city of Chicago is reportedly set to settle the case, paying Koschman’s mother $250,000.
How about some individual liability for Vanecko? Maybe the file-hiders, too.

I know what some people might say things like Walsh is a great boss and stand up guy the same with Gilger and Spanos. But they were stand up guys for the wrong reason and the wrong person, a family member of the man that put the City to near bankruptcy. A man that cared for himself and a few chosen people around him. The offender his nephew did 60 days in jail in McHenry county for his crime. The officers involved will probably end up do more or close to that much in suspension time. None of the people involved and still on the job will go any farther in their careers and came close to going to jail. Next time just say NO I won't cover up a murder.

If I was Koschman's Mother, I'd use the money to find out who covered up her son's murder, and make their lives as miserable as I legally could. Because you know that isn't the only dirty thing they've done.

Leon Dingle Jr. and his wife, Karin Dingle, leased out a portion of a small, one-story building they owned on the West Side to UIC for storage. They collected nearly $700,000 in rent over seven years from the state university — more than twice the $310,000 they paid for the entire building, university and property records show. When the university signed the lease, Leon Dingle was treasurer of the Illinois Medical District Commission, a government agency that oversees development within a 560-acre swath of the West Side that includes the UIC hospital campus. Four years earlier, Dingle and his fellow commissioners agreed to put up a $30 million office building at 1747 W. Roosevelt that UIC is now buying on an installment contract, lawyer for this contract is PATRICK DALEY THOMPSON and Richie Daley's friends are the developlers!

Why is that these losers then finders then losers again of files and then partial finders of the files are still together and in charge of sensitive investigations, in command positions and still teaching detective classes to new detectives as well as certifying seasoned detectives. I mean they even thought it was hilarious to hide a file in the room and then find it before the end of class. Not one person held to task, they are still commanders, chiefs, a homicide lieutenant and a homicide sergeant still doing the victim, the department and the city an injustice, while boasting, laughing and never disciplined for their acts. These people were caught, their emails captured, their flagrant lies yet still they are promoted and pass their lack of respect and protocal for criminal investigations as their way of remaining clouted. DA, JS, GY and especially DW and SC you should be ashamed of yourselves. Your big bragging mouths will catch up. Put that karma in your spermatozoa club. Yeah what about that private club....we know about that too.

Apparently there really was a cover-up if the City is willing to pay anything. So why are we taxpayers left holding the bag again to protect Daley from stuttering through a deposition? The cover-up which now appears no longer to be "alleged" needs to be fully investigated with careers to be ended where necessary and Daley needs to explain what he knew and when he knew it and what he ordered done by his political hack minions.

2004...David Koschman is killed by Richard Vanecko, the nephew of Richie Daley, the then current Mayor of Chicago.

2011...Seven years later, Vanecko gets charged and pleads guilty and is sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Result....mother of victim will be given a settlement of $250,000.

2014 (Oct)....Police get a call of attempted break ins of cars at 40th Street and Karlov Avenue in the Archer Heights neighborhood. Police arrive and see Laquan McDonald standing on the sidewalk holding a knife. When ordered to drop the knife, Laquan McDonald starts to walk away. More police arrive and attempt to box him in with two squad cars. Offender then takes his knife and slashes the front tire of a squad car and damages the window. Officers exit their vehicles and attempt to disarm the offender when offender lunges at one of the officers with the knife still in hand. Offender is shot and killed.

2015 (six months later)....the city is set to give offenders mother a $5 million dollar settlement.

This is justice?

What a slap in the face. $250,000! They should pay her 250 million the way they covered up the investigation. The city claims the statute of limitations expired for a civil suit. But just like mobster Harry Aleman, he was charged twice for the same crime because "double jeopardy" didn't apply because his first trial was fixed, just as the Koschman case was fixed from the beginning.

The City's obstruction liability settlement is only the first. Mind you it's only a mere $250k, much less than what the City pays out to the "estates" of deadbeat thugs.
The next phase begins with this closure and the attorneys are going to pursue the Wrongful Death action.
Monetarily, it's not over, unfortunately hiding files and lying didn't contribute to death. That's were the shame should be...no integrity, no balls and no remorse.
All whole lot of grief because of a mayor and his bully kin.

The suit was well after the statute of limitations for such lawsuits. The mother, it seems, either believed in the system or was too timid to force the issue sooner. Sad. The detective division should hold its head in shame over this one and probably a few others.

If this happened to your son I don't believe anyone would say that the investigation was thorough and lawful. It was a cover up at all levels, and all those who participated for an anticipated "reward" later on have blood on their hands. No money can remove the blood from the stained hands of those who are culpable . May you seek forgiveness from the Lord because nothing else will remove the guilt you all bear.

It's entirely possible Daley didn't know a thing about this while it was happening.

People who are loyal to a politician, for whatever reasons, know that part of the payback is to protect that politician and their family as best they can.

When this hit the fan, the word went out fast that a Daley relative was involved. So, unless a wire was up at the time, you'll never be able to prove he knew anything.

As City Hall settles a conspiracy lawsuit filed by David Koschman’s mother, Chicago’s inspector general is fighting two police unions over the discipline of officers who botched Koschman’s homicide case and failed to charge a nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has directed Inspector General Joseph Ferguson to advise police Supt. Garry McCarthy about which cops should be disciplined in the 11-year-old case. But the unions representing police sergeants and lieutenants argue that only the department’s internal affairs division can investigate police officers.

“There is a pending challenge . . . over the inspector general’s authority over disciplinary action,” city Corporation Counsel Stephen Patton said Monday after outlining the $250,000 settlement for Nanci Koschman to the City Council Finance Committee. The full council is expected to approve the deal Wednesday.
