- If filmmaker Spike Lee plans to call his next movie “Chiraq” — an inner-city tale of black-on-black violence filmed in Englewood — he might want to think twice about asking taxpayers to kick in a multimillion dollar tax break, Ald. Will Burns said.
On Wednesday, the South Side alderman asked Lee’s representatives at a meeting with the Illinois Film Office and city department of special events about how much of a tax break the Amazon Studios production hopes to collect.
“They said $3 million,” Burns (4th) said. “I said, 'You recognize that by seeking public support that gives us a seat at the table.' They had no response to that.”
Seat at the table? Screw that - tell him to take his movie and pound sand.

There is so many titles to movies that are far worse. If Spike Lee wants to name his movie Chiraq then be it. Little midget Mayor is no different than Kim Jong-un the Korean Dictator about the movie he wanted sensor.

Well guess what, Cinespace in the old Ryerson Steel plant here was founded in Toronto when he chased the movie business out of town.

The obvious is often overlooked.
Rahm's brother is huge in the movie industry.
Spike Lee needs publicity and financing for his movie.
Rahm does brother Ari a favor. He makes headlines for Spike Lee and his movie.
Financing and publicity flow.
Whether you're a Lee fan or not, whether you believe in the title of his movie or not, it's wrong for the city to get so bitchy over the title.
Few can argue that Chicago can be a dangerous place.
But more importantly, where will it end? If Lee caves and titles the film something else, let's say Chighanistan, the city has won. Where will it end? How long before they demand to have a seat at the table as to a movies theme, or message? How long before they demand a place at the editing table?
It's a First Amendment issue. If they only give money to films that they approve of, we've all lost.
