Hardly a Ringing Endorsement

From the comments:
  • All the Lieutenants in 005 bid out except 1...yep the 10 hour days are great
When the white shirts bid out, something is definitely wrong.

And probably another reason that the Department won't open citywide bids.

I talked to personnel (HR)and they are busy with retiring PO's every day. I recently heard from a retiree that when they retired, they had to wait in line due to so many retiring PO's showing up at once. I grant you that this was at the beginning of the year, but small wonder we are undermanned at all levels...I am personally tired of worrying whether there will be a pension at the end of the road for me. Makes me want to jump ship. Will the last officer please turn out the light, and take down the upside down flag???

I'm hearing its not because of the 10 hour schedule they're leaving but it's because of the new Commander and his management style. He's already making waves.
Instead of focusing on a plan for the District's daily multiple shootings he's to busy sweating his supervisors and officers for the small stuff and kicking back honorable mentions for nonsense. Another merit bright star! We give him less than a year B4 the local politicians and "revruns" in the District run him off!

    (1) 40 hour VRI a week
    (1) 40 hour CTA

Include pension contributions from VRI. You can continue working VRI part time when you retire. This also allows you to have insurance. One can retire 20 and out like NY. Wazap wazap

A mass exodus is also awaiting in 003! It looks like the Commander has lost his damn mind with all the shootings. He's always harping on beat integrity and wants us to stay on our beat but with all the shootings, priority and not to mention bullshit calls it's virtually impossible. He's had officers counseled and disciplined for bullshit and everyone including the supervisors are fed up with it. Last week and an FTO was ordered to drop a to/from on why he wrote a ticket with his 2 recruits off his beat? Are you fucking serious? What kind of message does this send to them and everyone else who has been pushing the beat for years and well before his arrival? So because this officer was proactive and observed a violation on another beat he gets reprimanded? That move right there Bossman just shut down the little activity that was being generated by your beat cars particularly on 1st and 2nd watch.
The only reason your contact cards are slightly up is because of all the two year morons in Tact that will eventually get caught up for unconstitutionally writing a contact card for bullshit. Get rid of Jones and bring back GE. GE was as crazy as they come but he always took care of the working coppers and never intentionally hurt anyone. He was a fair man no matter who you were and where you came from. If you weren't doing your job he would flip out but for the most part 003 was a much better place for us to work and a better place to live for the community.

10 hour days in my humble opinion suck. I know I am out numbered by an outspoken bunch, but I believe there is a silent majority out there...

But here is the real on the 10 Hour day...
Yes you get more days off, but it is like working 1st watch. You spend your first day catching up on some very necessary downtime. (Sleep)...or walk around like a Zombie...I've done it. Sleep Deprivation is no way to a happy life...
CPD is a 24 hour business. There is no way to split shifts up and be fair to all. Much less, issue squad cars, and radios, and Tasers, and etc... Someone's going to get the shaft doing reports at the desk. Operations demand the majority of Police on the late PM hours. Someone's going to get 1800-0400hrs shifts. There are those who may like it and they will speak up and say so. (The empty barrel makes the most noise). When someone else has a sweet deal that fits them, they will always speak up louder for themselves. (narcissists) Ask around...I'll retire before I do those hours again.
We can go to 2 shifts if we do 12 hour shifts. Other wise, 8 hours is the only way to go. Family planning is way easier around an 8 hour shift. If you think differently, you have never worked a 10 hour watch...
Add in going to court to those who are so inclined, and it becomes a nightmare. Ask for another day off to go to a graduation, or a wedding, and maybe get denied. Change your day off and your Bio clock is totally screwed. Spend all day at 26 & Cal., then straight off to work. You'll see your kids when they are grown, and want a new car...Ask any Detective in VC. If they like 10 hour shifts, if they do, it's because they are on the second watch...

LOOK before you leap people!!! CPD management wants this because it solves manpower issues. This does nothing for our pensions! I for one will not work the shitty hours, so someone else with less time can get the shaft. Seniority still counts for something. So PO's with less than 10 years on can just shut up and save the outcry...for someone who cares. We will get the Department we deserve people. And it will reflect the government we have already elected...
    A word to the wise...

The 10.5 hour days are not worth it. There are only 2 watches. Days and midnights. They overlap eachother with a couple different start times. If you work the late midnight car you start at 2000 hrs, at 0430 you and the rest of the ppl that started at 2000 are the only cars up in the whole district until 0600 when days gets out there (really like 630) so if you were planning on taking your kids to school or relieving your wife/husband before they went to work your SOL. Traffic accidents, burglaries, DUI's and drunken domestics are common in 05 at the 0430-0600 window.
    - if you have lower seniority in your district expect to flop start times daily ranging from one night 2000 start and the next day at 1630. This happens every single day to the folk with under 5 years (in a rookie district) I bet would range from 10-15 years on in better districts.
