The Search Continues

  • Dozens of people showed up at a Northwest Side police station Tuesday afternoon to help save the life of a Chicago Police officer.

Blanca Magallon, 43, a plain-clothes tactical officer who works out of the 1st District at 18th and State, has leukemia, and needs to find a bone marrow match in order to undergo a life-saving transplant.

Many of her colleagues submitted to a quick cheek swab to see if they could be a potential donor to save her life, or the life of some one else in search of a match.
There might be some options out there:
  • Nine potential matches for Magallon have been found, but each donor decided not to go through with the procedure.

  • “Most people wrongly assume the process automatically involves surgery, but 80 percent of the time the bone marrow can be obtained through stem cells in a person’s blood,” said Lauren Johnson, who coordinated the marrow drive for Be the Match, which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program.
Hopefully, someone changes their mind or another match is found shortly.
  • Another bone marrow drive in which volunteers will undergo a simple cheek swab will be Dec. 29 at the 4th district station, 2255 E. 103rd St. from noon to 8 p.m.
Keep trying.

Found out at meeting today that FOP books wont be delivered until the 1st period, maybe longer. They say that the new crew didnt take advice from Dougherty and Co., who had a decade of experience.

I don't get it why go get tested if you're not going to go through with it? Why give a person false hope?

"Nine potential matches for Magallon have been found, but each donor decided not to go through with the procedure."

why take the test if you just wanted to know if you're a match, only to opt out?

rather cruel to know you were a match and then say no...

9 people were already matches.. you shouldnt be needed. But they declined. Why even get tested? Just to say you went to "support" her. Well, you didnt support anyone. You actually hurt a family. The family knows that there is a cure and it is within reach however those 9 people wont step up and save her... save a life. This isnt a game, its real and you refuse to help. wow.

I sure hope either a new match is found immediately or one of those nine matches would reconsider. God bless you and your family. I'm glad it was explained that it's not a painful procedure and this would educate people and make them at ease to become a donor. Keep in mind this could be your family member in need, please sign up for a match and save Blanca. She has four children, who need her and family and friends that love her.

I'm a bone marrow donor. For a little bit of pain you can save a person's life. To the people who are possible matches you won't regret the decision to go forward and see if your a good match. Please consider taking the next step its just a blood test. The surgery is outpatient. Easiest way to explain it is its just a big needle in your lower back. Your knocked out so you won't even know.

Those you declined may have spoken to their family members subsequent to finding and pushed for the matches to not go through the testing for medical procedure fears of something going wrong.

Match calls home and says, "Hi sweetie I am a match to help that copper out."
SO says, "Come home we need to talk further."

With 12 years up there Billy Boy was too busy trying to BACKSTAB Shields to get the letter in on time. So much for Billy's experience.

Remember the rules are the rules even when you are not in office!

What's up with Capparelli and Graham Crackers? Weren't they best of buds when they were on the shitty wide team?

A few things:

1) It's easy to get tested and you don't need to sign up to do it. bethematch.org is where you can buy the kit to do it - all of the testing gets processed through them anyway. The kit needs to be purchased and you do a cheek swab.

2) Apparently a fair number of people back out in general - it's a dick thing to do. And no, you don't know it's a cop when they call you to ask to donate. You find out a year after the donation IF you both agree. So there's that.

3) Donation can be done in two ways: the needle in the hip under sedation where they pull up to a liter of marrow out OR the PSBC, which you get a shot in the ass daily for a week then you spend 8 hours with an IV in each arm and they filter your blood. Either way, you're going to be spending 2 weeks at home on the couch recovering.

4) If you sign up to donate, there's a 99.8% chance you won't be called.

5) You stand A LOT better chance to match if you're the same racial/ethnic group as the person who needs it.
