Steinberg Column

Yeah, we read it. He points out some things that we pointed out and makes a column out of it. We're feeling like it deserves a response - an unusual feeling where Steinberg is concerned:
  • So when does somebody speak up for the police?

Believe me, I have no interest in being that person. It’s a lose-lose proposition.
We have no interest in you being that person either Neil. You have an ingrained bias, not only as a member of the media, but as being processed through the justice system for your domestic violence arrest. But there you are, and here we are.
  • The public — in one long howl of outrage, based on two fatal encounters between young black men and police officers, in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City — won’t appreciate having the perspective of the bad guys of the moment defended, even a little.
That's okay. You can defend the bad....oh wait. The police are the bad guys? In both cases, it was found by the courts that no crime was committed by the police or that a crime had been committed by the deceased. Therefore, the bad guy is the dead guy in both cases. Again - your bias is showing.
  • The cops — a closed-rank echo chamber if ever there were — sure don’t want the support of the media, whom they universally despise, and particularly not from me.
Not like the media is a closed-rank echo chamber at all, right?  Good god, don't make us drag out example after example And again, not particularly from you for the reasons stated above.
  • And, to complete the circle — making it, I suppose, a lose-lose-lose situation — I don’t want to do it. Not to say the issue is unimportant — it is important, particularly if you are one of the African-Americans killed by excessive police force. But if I were to start listing the huge, festering issues facing black America: lack of capital, lack of jobs, bad schools, bad health care — it would be a while before we even got to the legal system skewed against them, incarcerating black men unfairly en masse, and we’d have to list a few more pressing judicial wrongs before we even got around to cops killing people.

But hey, I understand, public attention is not parceled out coolly by the Jedi Council based on objective analysis of our most pressing problems. Debate flashes and strobes, echoing off rare emotional episodes, and one video is worth a thousand studies.
Excessive force was ruled out in both these cases, Neil.
  • Back to the cops.

When I set out to write today’s column, I figured it was high time I joined in the clamor. You can only blather on so long about obits and Santa letters while the nation is going through Racial Catharsis No. 342 without feeling a little superfluous.

Not that I was eager to swan dive into Ferguson, with my white-guy naivete. Pundit comments on the situation have tended toward the painfully obvious (one New York Times star began a column “We Americans are a nation divided,” and ended, “There are no easy solutions. But let’s talk.”) Well, duh.

But I thought I had an interesting twist. I’d begin the column, “You don’t need me to tell you that cops are angry and racist; they’ll tell you so themselves,” then hopped onto that mighty online river of anonymous police anger and bile, Second City Cop. I figured I would pluck out a few of the more bitter blasts of thin blue line contempt, vastly familiar to anyone who has ever visited the site, probably the most public face of the Chicago Police Department, given the reactive, we’ll-be-under-this-rock-if-you-can-find-us stance that the administration takes.
If only you had spared us all your "joining the clamor." We may have respected that more. And, ::whoops:: here comes your bias again - "“You don’t need me to tell you that cops are angry and racist; they’ll tell you so themselves,” and you name the blog. Thanks for the plug, but then you don't tell the reader the difference between the writers and the readers and the commentators, nor the fact that we can't prove, nor intend to prove that everyone here is a cop. We've noticed more than a few IP addresses from your building for one. Also, we're insignificant. Superintendents have told us so. Perhaps if the media did a better job tracking down the administration personnel who could answer their queries, or maybe ask Rahm why the superintendent is muzzled, then you wouldn't be labeling us a "public face," a designation we neither want, nor seek.
  • I started reading Friday’ post, headlined, “Protests Over What Exactly?”

“Then there’s the fact of the deceased weighing 350 pounds, his extensive heart disease, his asthma, the fact that he was able to yell not once, not twice, but TEN times that he couldn’t breathe — if you can yell, you can breathe, you’re just wasting the breath fighting. Oh, and he didn’t die of ‘choking,’ he died of a heart attack an hour later. But those facts don’t get reported on in the mainstream media.”

Hmm. I paused. Second City Cop is correct, sort of. The cops sitting on Eric Garner’s chest didn’t help, but it isn’t as if he was strangled.
No one was "sitting" on his chest Neil. He wasn't strangled either. "Positional Asphyxia" is a danger in grossly overweight people as they have trouble moving air when their entire body weight is concentrated on their diaphragm. It's also stressful to an enlarged heart caused by morbid obesity.
  • He quotes a reader:

“... we actually pay them [the police] to use force when a law-breaking suspect (even one breaking a trivial law) resists arrest. That is the job we’ve given them.”

    That also makes sense.

“To say this guy is guilty of murder or manslaughter seems to me to be a case of scapegoating the people we’ve tasked with implementing a policy that we have imposed ourselves ... If trivial laws should not provide grounds for arrest, We should change the laws to say so.”
That wasn't a reader Neil. That was a blog site - AceOfSpades. We linked it right above the portions you quote. It's a conservative site, so be careful if you click over. You might start thinking impure thoughts about "responsibility of the individual" and concepts like "smaller government" and "lower taxes." That's subversive stuff to someone in your circles. The entire linked article is a good piece of writing and people would only benefit from reading it.
  • To which Second City Cop says: “The bottom line — if you don’t want cops enforcing the law, then stop passing laws and telling the police to enforce them. When arrested, you don’t get to resist arrest. Period. The law says so. You resist, there are rules in place to overcome your resistance. You are not a ‘jury of one’ deciding what laws apply to you. Cops are authorized by the duly elected authority to overcome resistance.”

You can debate whether that is true, but it struck me as an opinion worth airing. We are a nation of laws, and we call on police to enforce those laws. They don’t always do it in a pretty fashion, but to judge all police by these public incidents is to make the same mistake as those cops who treat every black person as a thug who hasn’t yet reached for his weapon. So to echo my betters at The New York Times, yes, we need a dialogue about all this. But you can’t have a conversation if only one side is doing all the talking.
We address that second-to-last paragraph in a post somewhere below, quoting the Illinois Compiled Statutes as to Use of Force by Police and citizens. That last paragraph is a mostly nice bit of writing. It's too bad that Neil ruins it by "echo[ing] my betters at The New York Times...." That agenda-driven rag is more of a closed echo chamber than the thin blue line Neil. We can't have that conversation because the New York Times and the leftist media won't permit it. Everything is racist, everything is driven by color, everything is in direct opposition to what MLK wished for.

There might be problems in this country, but these two cases are poor examples to be building a movement on. "Hands up, don't shoot" has been proven to be a lie, plain and simple. It never happened. Three autopsies, including one by the family and one by the federal government said so. And the "I can't breathe" nonsense, if you can say it ten times, you're breathing.

Hey, Steinberg!

Remember me? I'm the retired CPD sergeant that exposed J-FLED as the lying coward that he truly is.
You took issue with my charge in your Sun-Times column of April 7, 2010.

Perhaps this link will jog your memory. Click on J-FLED "GOTTA RUN"

Still skeptical? Then listen to the lying coward contradict himself in radio interviews a year apart. For the record, his Public Information Officer (PIO) was one Roderick Drew, a civilian.
Now click HERE; YOU MAKE THE CALL, STEINBERG.

J-FLED was less than 45 seconds away from what remains an unsolved murder in Englewood. Instead of backing up his officers going into harm's way, he cut and ran the other way. That poseur couldn't make a patch on a real street cop's ass.

Want more? GOOGLE "Jody Weis" and coward.

I will not reflexively stick up for the Police. But I will not go along with railroading them.

I have seen the complete lies about Duke Lacrosse, George Zimmerman, Darren Wilson, and a dozen others in the media. And this week alone, the Lena Dunham and UVA "rapes." Most of what I see in the media is complete baloney and often the exact opposite of the real facts.

And I hope that body cameras will work. If people see the unadulterated truth, 99% of the time, they will agree with, and support the police.

Ferguson, Idiot Cops, and Experts Who Know Nothing At All

Written by Mad Duo Chris on 09 December, 2014.

Remember a couple years back, when that plane crashed in that city and killed all those people? And all the news networks talked about it for months? And every guest

interviewed on the news said, “I don’t know anything about flying, but let me tell you what that pilot should have done”?

Or maybe you remember that incident not long ago, where doctors tried and failed to save a patient with a rare and deadly disease. After the patient died, "experts"

with no medical training, knowledge or experience talked nonstop about what the doctors did wrong. “Those doctors must have no idea what they’re doing. All they had to

do was make the patient not die. How hard is that?”

What? You don’t remember those incidents? That’s odd. Maybe you’ll remember this one.

There was this cop once, in some small town somewhere. He stopped a guy for something minor and let him go, then realized the guy was a suspect in a bigger crime and

stopped him again. The guy attacked the cop. They fought, and eventually the cop shot and killed the guy.

And for months, people with literally zero training, knowledge or experience with lethal force encounters blathered on about what that cop should have done. They spoke

on national media outlets. They wrote articles for newspapers and blogs. They spoke at public events. And they constantly said ridiculous, stupid things like “The

officer should have shot Brown in the leg.”

Or “All the officer had to do was use a Taser, baton or pepper spray.”

Or “There’s never a reason to shoot an unarmed person.”

Or “That officer fired six times and there’s no way that can ever be justified.”

Or “That poor young man was executed for stealing cigars.”

Or “The officer must have been lying. An unarmed person would never attack an armed cop.”

Or "The cop should have been put on trial for murder so everyone could see whether he was guilty or not."

Sound familiar? Could be you’ve heard a little something about this case. I have, and I’m sick of the constant storm of ignorant bullshit being spewed about it.

Steinberg. Before I left my house tonight for work I looked at my Children doing their homework at the Kitchen table and kissed my Wife Good Bye. As I walked to my car and looked back at what I have and what achieved. I thought to myself I have everything in the world that a man could have. And worked every shit detail to achieved what I have. But thinking about it I never thought for a second about going to work and killing someone because they are black. white or any other human being. We don't do that. Since the Media/ Civil rights Lawyers and every Politician came out and said change has to happen. Not one person has come up with what change should happen. All they want is a Cop to lose his/her Job .Go to Prison. Lose their home and put their families out on the streets. But the Politicians, clergy, And every other Liberal should really wonder when the crime rate goes up and the shitbags are killing each other in large number and no one is being held accountable for the behavior.. The only thing that will be on video is the us sitting in the car writing a report and waiting for someone to come and shovel the shit in a body bag. When little MoMo is run away from the crime scene. Let him go who cares. This is what everyone wants. No one has ever been fired for doing nothing so just remember when you left your house and family. Your family comes first. Mayors and PoliticianS come, And go and will throw you under the bus. Do all the Police work from your car.

Through the years I've always wondered about biased anti-police media rhetoric that panders to the masses for ratings and circulation. At years end, the city and police department or the OEMC releases the statistics regarding the number of calls for service. Responding to these calls, be it in the home or on the street, the action of the police is usually a response to a request or provocation of the caller. Its not like during any 8 hour shift, you don't get to cherry pick the incidents you respond to. Those assignments are dispatched and on a good day, there might be enough cars available to respond rapidly.
For the media, or anyone else to suggest that there are enough hours in the day, or enough police to satisfy requests for non 'in progress' calls is stupid.
In short, we don't pick our jobs, they're given to us.
They rarely have the time or inclination to make these encounters personal, there's other calls to handle. So Sternberg, Sharpton, Jackson et all, go fuck yourselves.

I love this BS about "have a conversation about race."

Blacks want to have this conversation because they have nothing to lose. Let's say a conversation between a black guy and a white guy ends poorly with each calling the other a racist.

What happens to the white guy? Well, if he's a professional, in the public eye or serves the public, there's a good chance that the white guy could lose his job and/or career.

Now what happens to the black guy accused of racism? NOTHING. No risk to their livelihood at all.

This is why you see white news reporters blubbering when it comes to race. One slipped word, one misstep, and they could face demotion or firing.

Hey Steinberg , maybe you should write an article on how breaking laws and engaging the police in violence will not only get you in trouble , but may cause your death. The common thread between the Eric Garner's case and the Mike Brown case is they were both criminals , who chose to resist arrest. In the case of Mike Brown he not only resisted arrest , he also attempted to disarm a police officer in full uniform and in a marked police vehicle. It does not get more serious than that. Let's just say for a moment that the outcome was different and Darren Wilson was shot and killed with his own weapon. Would you or anyone else in the media be writing about that incident ???
My guess is no , you would not. Would anyone be protesting ,that a man who is paid by the tax payers to keep everyone safe was murdered by a common criminal. Again, my guess is no . Here is the thing that most citizens don't understand. Everyday that the police go to work they could be killed or seriously injured. Here's the other thing that people don't understand is that every time a police officer makes a decision to use any type of force they are subject to scrutiny by the citizens and even the police department. No police officer wants to kill anyone ,but when individuals like Mike Brown leave you no choice , because they have committed to the cause of not going to jail and they are willing to kill you so that does not happen ,then the police are left with no other choice , but to defend themselves. Maybe if Mike Brown's parents raised him properly then Mike Brown would have made better choices in life. Like not robbing a store and not attempting to disarm a police officer. The big story here , Neil , is that a large group of society chooses not to follow the laws and when they are caught and punished for their crimes they refuse to take responsibility for their actions. The only people responsible for the deaths of Mike Brown and Eric Garner are Mike Brown and Eric Garner. Good day ,sir.

Heh... Kinda wishing Steinberg had fought with The Police. It would have been very educational for him but at least he would have real and compelling reasons for grinding his rather largish axe with The Police.

Hmmm... Maybe he DID put up a little struggle just as the cuffs were going on and got a love tap for his trouble.

He seems to have a hard time wrapping his head around an institution like Policing and the people who do such.

Maybe his animus is fueled by wanting to be a cop and not having the balls to sign up and take a post?

We notice he spills COPIOUS ink about how the cops are always irate, bitter, closed-minded, hateful and "Racist."

Hey Neil!
You crack both hips trying to actively avoid delving into plausible reasons why Policemen are so "afflicted" as it were...

What's wrong?
Are you afraid that careful and thoughtful examination will reveal some favorable to The Police truths and cause the poison ink in your pen to dry up?

Without his native bias and hard skewing toward the premise that The Police are the enemy along with his employ of weasel words, slippery syntax, artfully crafted misdirection via omission while intentionally pulling up just short of fact and the common sense of the reasonable man on the street, Neal Steinberg would be shooting blanks in this agit-prop war against The Police.

Yeah yeah...
He'll conveniently hide behind "Well why can't you guys just do your jobs?" (And not have to hurt or kill people and do it for less pay and no complaining about the conditions you work under?)

He admits reading the blog...

Gotta keep tabs on the competition?

Well, that's what happens when the only source of hard, straight talk and unfiltered news in this town is an insignificant blog contributed to by a bunch of "big, dumb, strong, mean and angry, wild-assed, free thinking" cops.

-Whither the Police?
What are they doing?
What are they thinking?-

Maybe Steinberg needs a "Beer Summit" with a handful of Policemen to gain insight and perspective?

He can write about the results:

"I Had a Beer With Some Chicago Cops..."

Meh... He might write stupidly about what the uncouth cops said that clash with his "feelings."

The Police are the enemy...
Viva Hate.

Tell you what. Either you or J-FLED get Bill Cozzi out of the poor house with a decent, full-time job paying at least the median wage and you won't hear another peep out of me on the coward. Bill's too proud to go on welfare and he refuses to sell "loosies".

You beat the crap out of a female... Not only a female but your wife.. Your wife, you know Neal the person that is supposed to be most important.. Most sacred and most of all be PROTECTED by her man.. Yet you defiled that sacred bond and were the ultimate tuff guy (coward) and beat her up.. Actually you beat the shit out of her from what I hear and you got locked up for it.. Now, you hate the police. You screwed up and beat up somebody smaller and weaker than you and real men stepped in to protect your wife. Now your mad at the police.. Yeah, ok Neil... We don't want your support. Myself and especially my wife, who I love, support, cherish and respect think you are a complete classless mutt who is a bully to women and a crybaby know it all in your rag of a paper. We don't want your support, we don't want support from cowardly, wife beating scumbag womanizing bullies. You should be ashamed of yourself.. And if your wife stayed with you after that then shame on her.. But I understand it's hard to get out of an abusive relationship..

He could never write a column that the new owners of the paper don't approve of. The times was bought by a company that had our new governor as a partner and has friends of the mayor running it. Think they don't have an agenda? He had better toe the line or loose his job! No one else would hire him.

This might be deserving a separate thread. Discusses the plight black officers now find themselves in due to liberal policies. Guess the democrats don't represent ALL blacks.

TO: Neil Steinberg as well as all mainstream media.

RE: CPD Officers murdered by initially UNARMED cop killers using officer's weapon.

Off the top of my head, I recall at least eight (8) officers who were murdered with their own weapon: Thor SODERBERG, Richard FRANCIS, James CAMP, Gregory HAUSER, Raymond KILROY, Lee SEWARD, William FAHEY and Richard O'BRIEN.

Thank God Darren Wilson wasn't killed by Michael Brown.

Thats great and all Neil, but I am extremely proud to say that I have never stooped so low or done anything so terrible to the woman I love and cherish.. If coppers have, then I have NO respect for them also. You unfortunately Neil fall into the same boat as them. The rate of domestic violence can be whatever number for what group of people but what I do know is that in the Steinberg household its very real and it happened. Thats what I do know. Not in my house though. Never has and NEVER will. Poor poor Neil. Trying to convince everyone that hes not the only one who has done it and doing the old slide of hand of look look what police officers do.. sorry buddy, youve done it and I havent. and yes, I wrote the above post about Neil Steinberg being a wife beating scumbag bully who hates the police because cops had to come protect his wife.. not him. I know I will never forget about your skeletons Neil. And to the coppers that engage in domestic violence like Neil Steinberg you can GFY also.

Neils comment about the domestic violence is that he is "humiliated"??? how about YOU ARE DEEPLY SORRY TO YOUR WIFE AND CHILDREN??? Its not about you Neil, its about your wife. Your humiliated?? Talk about being full of yourself. Your 2 sons must be so so proud of daddy. What a role model. Hopefully they learned (somewhere else obviously) how to treat and respect a woman.. especially the mother of their children... disgusting.

I've always said, . . . the police are already the bad guys when you meet them. First, you have either broken some sort of law and you don't want the police there, or secondly, something has happened to you and you call the police because they were not there to stop something from happening. Lose-Lose situation

Capisce is correct. Means I understand or Do you understand.

Hole is not correct, not in "made hole again." It is in that context whole.
