Latest Manufactured Outrage

  • A video apparently showing a Chicago police car blasting the song “Sweet Home Alabama” during a recent protest against police violence has sparked a CPD investigation.

Gabriel Michael, a Humboldt Park resident, said he was at the West Side protest Saturday to take photos, but started capturing video once he heard the song coming from what appears to be an unmarked car in the police escort following the marchers.

“Some of the lyrics in themselves aren’t racist … but I know it’s also been co-opted by groups, maybe bigoted groups, as an anthem of Southern pride and those Confederate-type values,” said Michael, 30. “That’s what was so jarring to me. To hear that playing from a police car at the end of a protest against police brutality and the murder of African-Americans, it was just jarring.”
Uh huh. It seems he sent it everywhere except to the Department or IPRA so an investigation could take place. It's so much easier to "prove" your case in the court of public opinion rather than in an actual investigation.

We saw the video - it looks like someone dubbed it in after the fact and then started spreading the video around. You can see this guy laying the groundwork for not having any actual witnesses:
  • Michael said that because most of the protesters were marching ahead of the police escort, he’s not sure how many heard the song, but people have echoed his concerns after the video surfaced.
No one complained until after the video surfaced. There were 200 marchers in one media report. And no one heard anything on scene. Funny how that happens.

Lynyrd Skynyrd had a Stars and Bars on an album cover - must be racist! It certainly isn't the band's fault some backward types co-opted the song as an anthem of base behavior. Their own words say it was in support of Neil Young's political activism against segregation. They wrote it. We assume they know what they're talking about.

I've spent more than half my career in unmarked cars ranging from mid 80s LTDs up thru late 90s / early 2000s Crown Victorias.

You know how many of those unmarked cars had a PA system?

NONE.

Zip. Nada. Nilch.

And while not 100%, I'm quite confident that none of the unmarked vehicles of late are equipped with PA systems either.

So fuck off, Gabriel Michael.

May you one day soon be victimized by the savages you blindly champion you ignorant, uninformed asshole.

But, seriously, using doctored audio to manufacture an issue? Despicable.

I guess the haters will have to purposefully ignor the lyrics to "Curtis Lowe". It just would not do to have a song that reminisces about a young boy being influenced by and looking up to a black man and the sorrow he felt about the little regard that was shown at Curtis' passing. It is a love song of the purest kind. Ronny Van Zants' lyrics are haunting and Allen Collins acoustic slide work underpins the pain felt at the old mans passing.
I am guessing that those on the left would not be comfortable citing Curtis Lowe. It doesn't fit their purpose.

This is what the "struggle" has come to. Blaming words and symbols are easier then discussing the personal responsibility problems that account for almost all of the self inflicted wounds the "poor" suffer from.
with the protests now winding down the liberals are at a complete loss where to go with this now. because only an honest conversation is left to discuss. And that can never happen because personal responsibility has to be part of that conversation.
And they know it. easier to blame the police

There may be a reasonable explanation for this music to have been coming from one of the cars, and maybe people are overreacting and making assumptions. It's a really great song, honestly. But I also have to say I know the person who recorded this, and I can tell you he is 100% honest person and he has NOTHING against the police. He is a person who documents and photographs things often, and he was just sharing something he found notable. He had no idea it would become this big, but I promise you- he did not fabricate this video. Find another strategy to defend this if you must, but the video is real.

I think unemployment, broken families, reliance of government checks for sustenance, lack of male role models, homicides occurring by those who if the president had a son would look like the president killing those who would like another president’s son, substandard public educations, poverty, drug addiction/abuse and lack of employment opportunities within these urban communities are more of a priority. Instead we focus on music which neither hurts nor offends anyone except this extreme leftist utilizing Marxist modeled propaganda techniques to agitate the community.

The recent events in Ferguson and NY are a direct result of the policies put forth by President L. Johnson's "Great Society". What it spawned was Generations of Poor people dependent upon Welfare and other Government entitlements.

Believe me, I have absolutely have no problem with giving people a helping hand , but these policies ,although failed, probably were intended to help until people could make it on their own.

Being a 27 yr retired veteran of the CPD,I have to think these failed Policies continued because Politicians realized that by discontinuing them or reducing them would alienate an ever growing percentage of the Electorate.

I worked years ago with a Black guy who grew up in the Cabrini Green Projects ( the 50's) and he told me his neighbors and friends were Irish, Italian, German And Jewish. He was a friend ,so I asked him why he thought that only the Blacks remained there. (1980's)? He stated" Unlike my Parents, both working people, a large percentage never had the upbringing to go out and make it on their own".

Take from this what You will and see if makes sense to you . Thank you for the Rant.

Sounds like somebody got disciplined. He says he was a Roll Tide fan, and, as a fellow Roll Tide fan, I get it. You just gotta play that song loud, and sing along, too. You're compelled. Of course, some dick at the SPLC says he doubts the cop is an Alabama fan because, as we know, those attorneys at the SPLC have ESP.

But, on a serious note. Is the Loop radio station going to be banned from playing "Sweet Home Alabama?" Is this what we are coming to in America?

Clearly, people have not heard the song The Ballad of Curtis Loew, and don't realize that LS played at some Jimmy Carter shindig when he was running for president.

“Sweet Home Alabama” has been “a kind of neo-Confederate anthem” for years, according to Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization. The 1974 song was written in response to Neil Young’s song “Southern Man,” which has lyrics about racism and slavery.

Potok dismissed the theory that police were playing the song in support of the University of Alabama football team, which played that day.

“It certainly does look like the officers were taunting the marchers,” he said. “I suppose there’s a tiny chance that these officers were huge University of Alabama fans, but I kind of doubt it.”

What the fuck does this jagoff know about who is and who isn't an Alabama fan. Besides, Neil Young's "Southern Man" was a slap in the face to southern men, while Lynard Skynard's song was a slap back to Neil Young.

Go Crimson Tide!
