Nice Run Guys

  • Jackie Robinson West was looking to make history its story Sunday when it faced Seoul, South Korea for the Little League World Series championship.

But the team from Chicago's South Side fell short in an 8-4 defeat in front of an announced crowd of 28,671 at Lamade Stadium, which is nestled in the mountains of the Little League capital of the world.
That's a bigger crowd than Blackhawks and Bulls games and far more than the Sox have seen in years. They also went farther that the Cubs have been in a century-plus. Very nicely done to everyone involved.

It was a joy to watch these bright-eyed, determined kids and the men who are their coaches. What a summer for them! Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Kids played good and the coach seems to be a stand up guy. I was very impressed I must admit.
He had thoes kids very disciplined and made sure they carried themselves in a respectful way.
Excellent job!!

This should have been a story about kids playing good baseball, with most of the kids being from police families. Regardless of race, if you have/had kids and they played sports you know the passion and energy that goes into supporting them (win or lose).

You make us all proud men.

I wish the mayor would congratulate them and get out of the way. Even on the CPS website they have a link and photo to make it look like they didn't close down schools and don't fund sports. Just because 9 members of the team attend cps schools doesn't mean that the cps has any connection or contribute to the teams success. Shameful at least, almost criminal.

See what happens when you put the best players on the field. You go deep in the tournament. Maybe the Chicagos finest can learn a thing or two about running their baseball team. For years they have let better and younger guys walk away from the displeasure of sitting on the bench because they consistently put the old hacks in that have been on the team for many years. The guy that runs the team is in his mid 40's and hes brutal. He puts all his buddies in and himself and the team is horrible. They are like 7-15 this year in a weak division. Hang it up boys and let the youth come in.

Can you say disproportionate media coverage? Channel 7 gave it one-third of the newscast the other day and seven minutes of news time (plus three minutes of sports time) yesterday.
Yes, it's good news, but enough, already. It isn't the ONLY news.

Great show. Looked at about 100 pictures of the kids, some fun action shots.

Chicago boy hit the Korean batter with a pitch, walked down off the mound and apologized and they shook hands.

Sportsmanship.

Much more civilized than the Oriole Park crowd, both parents and kids mfing at the top of their lungs. Hated to walk by that.

Of course that had to come. If it rained with the other team ahead the weatherman would be racist. When Derrick Rose was getting looked at for cheating on exams in his one and only year in college a south side congresswoman or state rep got on the radio (WGN) calling those who were just asking whether Rose had someone else take tests for him racist and they should leave poor Derrick alone. She wouldn't let anyone else talk, she kept yelling racist racist over and over. The magic word, If Derrick Rose were accused of murder there would be cries of racist. After that I stopped watching the Bulls. Haven't watched one game with DR in it. I must be racist.

Worked the outdoor viewing of last Monday's game. The dj/announcer introduces Rahm as "Mayor Emmanual Lewis". Coppers that caught it laughed their balls off. It was a double dig as Karen Lewis was speaking at a restaurant the next night about 2 miles away (Beverly Woods). After the game, a woman says to me, "See, we CAN behave ourselves." Reminded me of the Chris Rock bit about m/1's bragging about taking care of their kids--"You're posed to take care of your kids!!"

Good work fellas. You are number one in the US. Not to put down South Korea, but they probably had a bigger pool of kids to choose from or work their league a little differently to make sure all the very very very best players make it to one team.

Just out of curiosity, is there a Jackie Robinson East, North, South?

Congratulations for the parents acting like parents and pushing their kids to do something and work hard at it.

If more parents were like them, 85% of the problems in Chicago would magically disappear.

Parents taking their kids to practices, games and other events paid off BIG time for the rest of their lives.

The parents have something really BIG to be proud of in their kids and the kids themselves have seen that they can excel and really compete. ALL of them will have that for the rest of their lives.

Hats off to the parents and coaches of the kids.

Not a LEO, JAFO

Actually, many of us had a blast watching this event and were happy to escape the horrific realities of the daily bad news we've been subjected to lately--locally and internationally. If you're the police, I'd hate to be stuck in a squad car with you. A tour of duty with your cynicism must be interminable.

Watched the game with my wife's family... Big and loud Italians that seem to generally not be huge fans of black people.

You know what though? They cheered these kids on the whole way. "Good eye kid, don't chase that garbage" "Atta boy, nice hit" "That kid right there has class" (The one at the end who did the fist bumps with the first Korean player) All followed with plenty of clapping.

Got me thinking that there are few people that are truly racist, that skin color is all that matters. Don't get me wrong, I think her family is still leary of any black person but I think it has more to do with culture and character content.

Fine work Jackie Robinson West

Congrats to the players, coaches, and parents of Jackie Robinson West. These kids did an amazing job winning the national championship against some of the best Little Leauge teams in the country. The poise and discipline they displayed are a testament to their parents and coaches. The grace and sportsmanship shown after a disappointing loss to a strong Korean team did our city and our country proud. They are CHAMPIONS in every sense of the word. All of Chicago is proud of you.

I absolutely hate to watch the LLWS and the general exploitation of children by ESPN. I loved how they tried to show all the "fun" these programmed baseball machine children were having on commercial breaks despite the obnoxious cameras in the face of emotionally fragile prepubescent kids crying...that being said, I love baseball, and for reasons unknown, I have an affection for my hometown. It was a guilty pleasure watching this. Those boys absolutely did us proud. Congratulations

Did you see the JRW pitcher throw 3 pitches in a row, straight to the face area? First one actually make contact. Now THAT is classless. Taunting with the bat, that cocky militant attitude might get him in trouble some day. And no I didn't see any korean players doing anything unsportsmanlike.

I am so happy to see so many respond positively about the JRW kids since all I ever hear about on here are complaints about the "ghetto rats". There are many more positive stories like this one that aren't reported. It's unfortunate that many of you work in areas where all you see is the worst of the worst...It's also unfortunate that some on here still have hateful, negative things to say...racism goes hand in hand with ignorance no matter what the color...and correction to the person who assumed the kids were the children of police officers. They are not, just regular kids with good parents. I know some on here are uncomfortable or even angry that the usual stereotypes of young black men has for once been denied. And to the person that complained about the length of the parade route, the trolleys zoomed by so quickly it was over in the blink of an eye. No they are not astronauts but deserve every block if it helps to turn the tide of negative publicity on Chicago. I am from a police family by the way and many kids of officers get into trouble while the rates of divorce and domestic violence are high. Remember that Pooky and Laquisha represent a small segment of a larger demographic.

You're a goof. That kid had to fill in because no one was left to pitch. Did you see the Korean players HR celebrations? After the Korean kid was hit HBP, he went over and shook his hand and apologized. What the hell is a militant attitude? I got it. Blacks can't talk trash or we become "thugs" but a NASCAR driver (Tony Stewart) can exit his car and throw his helmet at cars in motion, but he's considered a feisty guy. The reason you didn't see the Koreans do anything unsportmanslike was because you were too focused on waiting to see the little Black kids mess up. GFY!!!

Do you all know that JRW cheated? Half the team shoukd have been inelligibel per little league residency rules. Several kids on that team dont live any where near Chicago traveling from towns like South Holland, Lynwood, Doton, Lansing, and Calumet Park. Why is no one talking about this?
