Firefighters Sue

  • A group of Chicago firefighters has hired a lawyer in anticipation of a possible legal challenge to a city hiring policy that will give graduates of Chicago public high schools an advantage in an upcoming Fire Department exam.

The firefighters say the preferential hiring practice that will affect the December exam should be extended to all Chicago residents, including those who, like the children of many firefighters and city workers, attended private high schools. Their legal fight is funded by a $20,000 donation from Firefighters Union Local 2.

The situation points to the competing political constituencies Mayor Rahm Emanuel faces as he approaches his re-election bid in February. Emanuel doesn’t want to anger firefighters, especially so soon after announcing a new contract with the union that was passed overwhelmingly by rank-and-file firefighters and the City Council. He also is loath to pick a fight with voters who choose private schools for their children, among them many of the city workers who are required to live in Chicago.
You mean city workers like....Rahm Emanuel? Those kinds of people sending their kids to private schools? It's kind of weird how democrats always want to punish the people who are doing okay for themselves, yet never notice the beam in their own eye as they keep their progeny as far away from the common-folk as possible lest they become tainted by those who work for a living.

I seem to remember seeing posters up in the station describing a program for kids in cps that want to be cops or fireman. Could this be what they are talking about? Can some one clarify?

Does this mean that the CPS is so bad that in order to make things fair we have to give a graduate points. This sounds like an admission that the CPS is so under performing that it's graduates must be given points in order to have any hope of being competitive in the job market.

Any prospective firefighter that did not attend a City public HS, should suffer a penalty. Nothing is more important for the education of our children, than they attend the public schools, and support our teachers union. Private schools mostly use undepaid non-union teachers.

He's squeezing the life out of the middle class who send their sons and daughters to private schools...mostly for strict classrooms and religious values... Then, tasking set-asides to kids who went to school under their parents mold. Where is freedom of religion, freedom of choice, freedom of movement? If this becomes rule...then those families who, in the future, send their children to private schools, should be free from paying the portion in their property tax bill that goes towards funding Cgo Public Schools.

How much lawyer time/work will that buy.

Just a thought but how about at least a matching grant from the Archdiocese of Chicago. Sort of like getting a little rebate for all that tuition they (and we) have been paying for all those years.

We should have that qualification on CPS for the position of Mayor. No suburban pukes from New Trier High School! That jagoff Rahm went to nothing but exclusive schools and he pulls this shit in the city he has dropped his carpetbag.

Miserable jagoff. Clearly he is pandering for votes. When he runs for President he will bribe the same people with other people's money. (ours) Expect things like free citizenship for anyone from south of the Rio Grande, minimum wage fight as an example. Rahm calls it income inequality.

That piece of shit is very dangerous.

Is everyone forgetting that they did this for the last Police test where was the FOP. It's not new but once again the fire department has the nuts to stand up for what is right and the FOP just takes a back seat they should be joining in on this fight. It is not right to penalize those that have no choice but to send there child to a catholic high school so that they don't have to subject there child to gang banging thugs ruling the CPS high schools. The least the FOP could do is donate another 20 grand to help out in the fight since it's to late to do anything about are last test. Yes I am a LEO

This is a blatant attempt by the alderman to get more blacks on the fire and then the police departments. They won't say it, but that is what this is. It probably is legal, but sure is wrong. One alderman came right out and stated that the majority of the fire department is white and catholic and he wanted to change that. What is right about that statement? An attack on Catholics, an attack on whites or both?

Don't quite understand the 5 point thing. Isn't the test a pass/fail and wasn't the passing grade for the last test a 62. Seeing that the test is geared at a grammar school or at best a high school level, how are is it to get a 62.
Then isn't it supposed to be a lottery for the positions, some saying it is determined by the last digit or digits of your SS number. My point is if its a lottery system, that alone takes away the value of the test scores because you could get hired with a 62 and not get hired with a 99 score.

You are so right. I send my kid to private school so she can learn and be safe. As demonstrated by the points given for being a CPS student, fuck that.

If I could go elsewhere I would, but we can't. If I had a crystal ball like GMac, it would tell me to keep working my ass off to pay taxes for those that can't do for themselves and that my daughter may grow to get a decent job so she can continue to perpetuate the DEmo-bullshit we have come to know in Chonduras. And Ald. Howard Brookins, 21st, defended the hiring policy, saying it’s right to give CPS students a leg up in applying for good city jobs. “The city is really trying to do something to give value to public education,” Brookins said.

The fire department “is probably overwhelmingly Catholic and white,” Brookins added, pointing to the public school preference as a “non-race based way” to help diversify the department.

This wasnt made a big deal for the CPD because everyone on the list eventually gets called for processing. This preference allows CPS and Vets to go first in line for proccesing. The last test was 2010 and 2013. the firefighters never even finished their lists from 1995 and 2006. This is why they are making a big deal about it because the chances of even being called for proccesing have gone done significantly for anyone thats not a vet or cps grad.

The problem is all the people applying that are not even living in Chicago. They should limit it to city residents only or at least have some college requirement instead of just a GED.

I am willing to bet that the demographics of CPS grads receiving preference will be close to the cities demographics. The kids getting preference won't be the ones from Simeon or Clemente(for obvious reasons). They will be from Lane, Von, Taft, etc. The good schools in the CPS systems are more even demographically than the really bad ones.
