Ceriale Softball Tournament
This weekend - if you can find the time:
- Just wanted to let you guys know about the Officer Michael Ceriale softball tournament again this year at Hamlin Park. It will be this Sunday August 3. It starts around 9 am and goes usually until 6 or 7 at night. It's pretty much a big BBQ/picnic for friends and family of officers and of the people playing in the tournament. All teams are already signed up for. I believe they have entry in May. So, if you could spread the word and let people know to come to remember Mike. It will be 16 years since we lost Mike on August 15. Thanks guys.
P.S. If people can't make the softball tournament itself please stop by our family owned bar, Montrose Saloon located at 2933 W. Montrose Ave located at the intersection of Montrose and Richmond near Horner Park to keep celebrating Mike's life. Thanks again guys.

Mike, although I never had the chance to meet you, I've heard only good things about you. Sixteen years ago you passed away on my tenth birthday. That was the day that I decided to become a Chicago Cop. Seeing the overwhelming support from the community and other Officers for your family when you passed and hearing your family speak about the pride you had in being a Chicago Police Officer sealed my fate. 16 years? Damn, I was working that night. The infamous (or notorious) Mike Byrne was WC in 002 that night. Younger officers, ask some old timer about the story of Mike Byrne and AA Flight 191 which crashed on May 25, 1979 at O'Hare moments after takeoff. You may have to go to a retired guy for that.

The kangaroo story is better.
Mike Ceriale's parents must have been pretty unbelievable to have mentored such a great guy. He is missed every day.
Mike. .Be careful the deuce is no joke ...was the last thing I got to say brother next time I saw you was steps of the church. .I'll never forget you brother your big smile and great attitude. .from 13 to 11 ..and almost out..Rest well brother
all gave some,some gave all.
I worked with mike when he first came out of the academy. He was a really nice guy and good officer. His life was cut short too soon. I can't believe how time has flown by. Keeping the family in my prayers. god bless!

Mike was a PPO in 013 before being reassigned to 002. Mike left a lasting impression the short time he was with us. It's impossible to forget him.

One of the saddest police funerals ever was that of Mike Ceriale. Huge loss for the world in general. RIP.
Mike Ceriale did his field training in the 13th Dis. I remember him telling everyone he was being assigned to the Deuce, and laughing about having to drive so far south into 'another world.' He said he had no clout. A few days after he'd been shot a chaplain led several hundred officers in a midnight prayer vigil in the small park across the street from the old Cook County Hospital. Officer Michael Ceriale died two days later. His family would later commemorate his life by having a prayer service in front of the 13th District on an annual basis. His photo is placed on the Wall of Honor at the Second District.

The Kangeroo story and the circus.
Not a day passes by. Mike you're always on my mind, daily. Mike was a great kid, big smile, good looking and so full of life. He made work fun, and always eager to learn and get his feet wet.
I was one of many that Mike worked with during his rookie year in 013 and he had a bright future that never took place because he died serving our city shortly after being assigned to the deuce. That dreadful morning when I heard on the news that A Chicago police offer was shot and fighting for his life my 1ST thought was ,WOW ! one of us has been shot and is fighting for his life to live, and then my phone rang, "Mikees been shot!!" I dropped the phone and rushed to county.
16 years have gone by so quickly, I know and feel your presence many times as the 3rd person on the car Mikeee .You are sorely missed, God Bless You up in Heaven brother.

When 013 combined with 012, the Ceriale Foundation filled out our gym with $5k in equipment including a heavy bag as Mike was a boxer. A plaque honoring him is displayed in our station. Wood Street at Augusta is named for him as is the Courage node at Police Memorial Park.
RIP Mike. Never Forgotten.
