Violent Weekend (UPDATE)

  • Easter weekend was no holiday from violence, with shootings claiming the lives of seven across Chicago and leaving 27 wounded.

That includes a Sunday afternoon shooting that left one man dead and critically injured another in South Lawndale.

About 1 p.m., an orange Hummer blocked a Lincoln Navigator head-on at the corner of 28th Street and Sawyer Avenue, Chicago Police at the scene said. Two people with guns then stepped out of the Hummer and fired nearly a dozen bullets at the Navigator, right under a police “blue light” camera.
"...right under a ... camera" - thank goodness it was there to prevent crime, right? The wounded individual in that case has since died, raising the total to 8. And the death investigation of the infant up north might drive it to 9. The wounded are up to 28 at the moment.

Among the dead was a CPD Officer murdered by her husband, a Cook County Officer, who then killed himself. Deepest sympathies to the family.

UPDATE: Almost 40 shot according to the papers, so there goes Garry's "reduction over last weekend" press conference. The five kids wounded in the late night shooting made the difference. Is there a "countdown clock" anywhere?

Someone in an earlier thread set the over/under at 6 dead, 44 shot. Not quite the 44 shot, but we definitely got to the 6 dead, and then some. Also, saw 4 kids (ages 11-15) shot on the south side, and it was over an argument that took place between girls. Unreal, and as it's been said numerous times in the past, no conflict resolution skills other than picking up a gun, and no sense of morals at all. Rev'runs, politicians, community leaders, any comments? I didn't think so.

To the family of the slain CPD officer, deepest sympathies.

Those blue light cameras are a farce... From what I understand, most haven't been maintained, so they don't work too well, and resolution is low.

Plus, criminals don't care - they're PROUD to be on tape, to get arrested, to go to jail, and get some 'cred'.

The only way to start fixing this problem is to LOCK UP those who use firearms to further their criminal acts for a minimum of 10 years, max security, russian gulag style - 24x7, single cell, double doors (no kiting) - out for an hour for exercise.

Enough of this revolving door Crook County bullshit...

I can only answer with your own words. "Criminals don't care - they're PROUD to be on tape, to get arrested, to go to jail, and get some 'cred'."

...and another reply, from California's Pelican Bay supermax --

"Jim, a 38-year-old SHU inmate from Long Beach, says that's wishful thinking. He says that to gang members, being sent to the secure-housing unit is an honor.

"Coming up here was the big thing," Jim says from inside his cell. "Put in work. Come up here, be with the big homeys. Because this is the only place you're going to be around the fellas, you know."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5584254

...and another...

"[One} gang even produced low-budget films and rap CDs with chilling lyrics. One such song, "Target Practice," has a chorus of females repeating "Pinta bound, pinta bound," which means headed for prison. This song's message is that prison is inevitable - even desirable.

"...the CDs flew off the shelves and triggered more violence.

"[This material] had a selected audience which were the young northern Hispanics that the NF really wanted to recruit and tell them that, 'You're not alone. You've got a huge army, a huge movement that is with you.'"

"That message inspired young street gang members like Willie Stokes. That's why he arrived to Pelican Bay filled with the anticipation of a college freshman.

"When I first went to Pelican Bay," says Stokes, "you're like so fascinated by, 'Oh here's all these guys you've always heard about, all these guys who run everything.' You're just fascinated with it all. And you hear the way they talk, Aztec language, just all this knowledge and philosophy from reading all this stuff. You just, you know, 'Oh I want to be like that, I want to be smart and educated like he sounds.'"

"I've sat in rooms with young kids, who say they can't wait to go to prison...Because their uncles have gone, their cousins have gone, the people they respect most in this world have gone to prison. And you scratch your head, and you go, 'Wait a second, you want to give up your freedom out here?' I've even said, 'You want to give up girls for a while? Come on, you're a teenager!' 'Yes,' the answer's 'yes.'"

http://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/prisongangs/a3.html

We are dealing with flat-out homicidal crazy here. No difference in/out of prison. So one goes in. Mama just raise up ten more with guns while she chant "Stop the violence!"

It's problematic, huh?

"...there goes Garry's "reduction over last weekend" press conference..." -- SCC

Oh, no, it doesn't. He was being interviewed by WBBM Radio at God knows what ungodly hour this morning (Alka-Seltzer must have worked wonders, from what we hear) and said, [paraphrasing from memory], "The weather doesn't cause or prevent shootings. When people come out on the street more, there is just more opportunity."

"These things go on regardless of the weather." Right. Same numbers at 20 below as at 100 degrees.

What is this "weather" thing he's clinging to? Just begging the question -- no one is asking him to change the God-damned weather.

...and then...

"These shootings were 90% gang related, and therefore do not wipe out the gains we have made in crime reduction."

GANG-RELATED SHOOTINGS DON'T COUNT!

This is the Emanuel "men's room" theory of crime, as expressed by the mayor when an elderly oncologist was knifed by some street animal in the lobby of a fancy Mag Mile hotel. "It didn't happen outside. It happened in a men's room" (sniff of derision).

Here we go again. Another year's murderous spring/summer/fall Hunting Season has already begun, as everyone moans "This guy's gotta go" and he stays on and on and on.

It's time people in the city realize we don't have a gun problem. A million less guns on the streets, and crime will still increase.

We don't have a police problem. Hire 10,000 more cops, and the crime won't stop.

We have a crime problem because we have a mankind problem. It's ironic, but "man", the very being that we are - "we" as in normal human beings, those who respect the lives of others - is the very being that we are fighting!

How's it go? "We have found the enemy and the enemy is us."

I'm sorry, and I know many of you may disagree with me, but man is inherently evil. (He's born that way. You've seen a 3 year old fighting over a toy, right? You've seen a 5 year old, try to scratch another kids face up for a toy, right? It's in us from day 1!)

How is it an 11 year old girl can be shot at point blank range just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and that's just normal life in Chicago. This kinda shit is hardly remarkable anymore. It's evil and we are becoming numb to it.

I want to suggest 2 things: #1 There needs to be more effort (I'm not saying cops are responsible for these, we are ALL responsible as a community, city, world) but there needs to be more effort to strengthen the family.

And #2 Getting back to God. (I'm sorry if I'm ruffling feathers here with this one). But is it a coincidence the farther this country, state, city, school, family (insert whatever collective noun you want) gets from God, the more rampant evil becomes? How is it that even after 5 years of the arrival of the "messiah" has evil continued?

No, it doesn't matter what leader we have in place, something is missing.

Isn't is a given, when man gets away from God, he's essentially saying, "I don't need you, I don't answer to you or anyone else motherfucker!"

(By the way, if you agree with my number 2, Number 1 doesn't need to even be stated - it's automatic. Family is automatically strengthened.)

Is it not that when man takes God out of his existence, he attempts to become a God himself? When a man doesn't have to answer to anybody, he thinks he's God.

Oh and here come the "we will not rest" speeches.

Meaningless words.

And here come the "we just graduated more cops" and "this will enable out initiatives to work" bullshit.

This is management central command speak that one can basically translate into a more basic phrase:

" You're absolutely right, these things take time. We're working on it"

A phrase that is taught in business school to diffuse a situation and to buy time when you're clueless.

After all, how can you argue when someone says or directly implies "that you're absolutely right"

"Okay I'm right so what are you going to do about it"

"well these things take time"

See how it works?

Many of these shootings occurred in areas with the highest concentration of storefront tax-exempt churches. Lots of churches but not lots of religious guidance like right from wrong, respect life, don’t hurt others physically and emotionally, help the less fortunate and your actions have consequences with the Creator. So many churches-not enough fatherless youth mentoring through traditional universal fundamental religious teachings. The State has assumed the role of father, provider, educator through a collective upbringing through a state dictated education system and the source of right and wrong. The State in an absence of parent(s) has conditioned wayward youth that bad behavior has no consequences and many times is rewarded.

Maybe the press can pin down all those solid gold badges such as the gang commanders, the many chiefs and assorted deputies to get their interpretation and ultimate strategy addressing all everyday violence across the city.

Their silence is deafening! I'd like to hear the little gems of wisdom and the dazzling brilliance of these silent leaders of C.P.D. Are they able to talk? Do they speak? I don't even know who they are since you never see or hear from them in the press, visiting community groups and making themselves available to address resident concerns. Or do they hide in bunker type cubicles out of the public eye putting the hurt on those stacks of official papers. Its time for the press to get busy and start asking those tough questions

Carefully chosen words used in the corporate controlled propaganda machines so as to not "conjure up certain images"

NBC reports 9 killed and "dozens" wounded.

What is your definition of dozens in this context?

Most people would say well there's an "s" on the end of dozen so it's more than 12.

Prolly 24 or so, right?

A far cry from 44 shot.

Well over 3 dozen.

If the smaller the number the better the obfuscation they might have considered using the word "scores" as the word "score" represents twenty of something.

Scores of people wounded. Over two scores.

Two scores and nine Easter weekend caskets ago....

Would be a nice beginning to a political campaign speech at a campaign fundraising dinner don't ya think?

Naaah, just stab your steak knife into the table while shouting DEAD,DEAD,DEAD...It's always good for a hearty laugh with the oligarch class

In a video released by the Department of Justice, Holder said they will expand the existing criteria government attorneys use to consider which offenders may be eligible for clemency. Later this week Deputy Attorney General James Cole will announce the new criteria, which Holder expects will lead thousands to apply to receive reduced sentences.

“This new and improved approach will make the criteria for clemency recommendation more expansive,” Holder said. “This will allow the Department of Justice and the president to consider requests from a larger field of eligible individuals.”

Throughout 2013, the Obama Administration began taking a piecemeal approach to reforming the nation’s drug laws as a part of Obama’s “Smart on Crime” initiative. In late 2013, Obama commuted the sentences of eight crack-cocaine offenders who had been serving lengthy sentences that would have been shortened under updated legislation. And last week, Obama commuted the sentence of another former drug prisoner whose sentence was lengthened as a result of a typo.

Competitively, AAR's balance sheet is not strong enough to take advantage of the consolidating airline industry or inorganic growth opportunities"

"AAR is poorly positioned to bear the worsening conditions in both. Longer term, defense sector is expected to suffer from budget cuts and North American aircraft services are fighting against maturation of the industry."

WRT AAR Corp. and why you should not buy the 'we have open positions with no qualified people to fill them"

YEAH! We also see signs "we're hiring" all across the city. They're at places like Sprint. Radio Shack, etc.etc.

Funny thing is those companies are closing 1000's of stores and branches. Doing massive layoffs.

Google it.

Think about that.

By promoting that your company has 1000's of openings that you just can't find qualified people for several things are accomplished.

1. you downplay that the company has problems, can't compete on a level field, is losing ground, by creating the illusion of growth. No-no we're hiring -- look see.

But open position doesn't mean people are hired and that the jobs are living wage full time with benefits. They are open positions and may never get filled in order to create the illusion of a demand.

2. you encourage 'the children' to study in school for the type of work that you claim there is a shortage of workers in. Which has the net result of flooding applicants into that line of work that in turn forces wages down due to the glut.

take a look at AAR corp the mayor was touting.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/2120013-aar-corp-about-to-hit-a-rough-patch

What kind of future do those kids that took that city welding and airline mechanic classes at the city college have?

Remember, the fat cat-plutocrats do not care if we and the poor are at each other's throats as long as we protect THEIR godforsaken asses.

I hope you 80+ new hires at least get a few days' breather before you have to hit the ground running. Glad to have you, but when all of you are scattered to the winds it looks like it shakes out to about three recruits per district, which is about ONE, maybe two, extra body/s per watch. Hope you can make a difference, don't make fools of yourselves, and go home in one piece.

If the weather could dash a mayor's ambitions why not a "superintendent" 's? And, can it dash a former ballerina's?

Remember Labar “Bro Man” Spann? Jodi Weis gave him that tough talk about knocking off the gangbanging stuff at Garfield Park. SCC devoted a thread to this topic, Knock it Off on August 28, 2010. This was the beginning of that gang initiative getting tough stuff.

Apparently all the tough talk didn’t work. Its like a snake bite minus the venom. Homan Square Gang Intelligence took him down for several murders shortly thereafter. He beat the cases at trail and was released. The case officer was meritoriously bumped up for this role of getting this thug charged.

Well, it looks like little Lamar got caught up again by this now Sgt. Five months of drug and gang investigating and he now has a criminal drug conspiracy case on this second go around. All that tough talk and murder cases didn’t bring him down. If at first you don’t succeed try try again.

Makes you wonder why there is such an out of control murder problem. Catch and release is a conservation police thing. We need to stop beating our own drums until the job is finished and done right like a conviction. This fool needs to go down. Like IDOC down state. We need to objectively examine his acquittal and not make those same mistakes over and over again.

I agree with not naming the police officer that was killed by her husband. Lots of people read this blog, and many are not our friends. There are many search engines that make it very easy to find someone's address and phone number by using just a name. This is why a while back I asked that the names of coppers involved in shootings not be put on this blog.

So they cook the stats to be artificially low for a year or three before concealed carry becomes a reality... when Chicago's gun bans have been overturned... Then they'll count correctly to show what a horror it has caused.

We need 2,500 more coppers right now. Spend the money to hire more police, not on bike lanes, Obama's library, Maggie Daley park or George Lucas' museum. The administration needs to take the handcuffs off of the police. I am not advocating brutality, but there was something to be said for the old time beat cop who would kick you in the ass when you were wrong. Much to the detriment of all, the reverends, activists and liberals have gotten the police dept. that they have wanted. Until you let the police take the streets back these problems will continue.
Where is the Federal Government and why are they not more active with using the RICO statute against the black and Hispanic gangs? They seem to have no problems using it against elderly Italians.
Last and most important the minority community must take a long hard look at itself. Where are Jesse and Sharpton, the activists, reverends and community leaders and why are they not stressing self reliance, telling their sons not to be gang members, their teen age daughters not to become pregnant their men to take care of their children, and emphasizing staying in school? White people can't have this conversation because it is considered racist, and the blacks like Bill Cosby are vilified for saying it. I know that for the most part I am preaching to the choir here, but the community must want to help itself and often, I wonder if they want to.

You need to post a thread about the fallen officer. As much as I think some of your fellow officers need to be fired, we need to acknowledge a fallen officer and a victim of domestic violence.

The solution to all this nonsense is to just eliminate welfare and once this happens violent crime will go thru the roof while all the lifelong welfare people find another place to get more freebies.

WHOOOOO!

Saw Rahm on the news looking like that stolen human skin was chaffing him something fierce!

What's wrong fella?
You don't have an answer to your voter base
royally clowning your little shit-ass this weekend, don't ya?

Hey... Why don't you get your revenge and "stick it" in the ear of the "Catered To Constituents" for not only upwardly fucking your "Crime is Down - Come to Chicago and Spend Your Money" (-Because you really have no other constructive use for it other than giving it all to ME!) but interfering with you making freaky love to all that high velocity money flying around.

Yeah! Stick it in Dude Inc.'s ear as punishment just like you swore to do to The Police. Right?

You piss away more money trying to keep Dude from lighting this city on fire than you do looking after the public's safety and well being by adequately staffing and equipping CPD...

Oh wait... You came here to Chicago itching to pick a fight with CPD instead of picking a fight with the very people responsible for this week-end's and many week-ends to come, grim street crime and murder stats...

Or are these grim numbers acceptable to you as long as you win your agit-prop war against The Police?

"Money-Money ZOOOM!"
Away Rahm flies toward the clatter of $25K plates somewhere on the Gold Coast or North Shore.

He's busily making that "Financial Freaky-Love" to grow his $7Million+ re-election fund to ward off all challengers. Rahm ain't takin' no chances on ANYBODY fuckin' up his hard won nut after all da financial freaky-love he's been doing.

Just funny how his only answer for Dude is to continue stripping resources from and burning CPD at both ends and trying to reduce if not destroy our pensions out of pure animus and political spite.

What don't you fuck with Dude the same way you're fucking with The Police?

Oh wait... Dude doesn't have rules of conduct to even pretend to abide by. Rahm is deathly afraid of what Dude might be capable of doing... Fucking with Policemen, their families and fucking with their ability to feed, clothe and shelter those families is supposedly much better politics and far, far safer than fucking with wild, ungovernable, death loving, iron-legged, hard head m/fers with nothing to lose.

Keep glorifying Fenger and Leo Schmitz. Fenger isn't the only school in Chicago and Leo is not supercop. CNN needs to put their camera's at Navy Pier on the 4th of July weekend. The beaches are where the savages attack the citizens and their is no police protection. Hundreds of calls for police and no police. Patrons being beat for their phones and getting robbed. Baseball bat attacks in the park by Lincoln Park Zoo. Hey CNN and you other media outlets. Get ready round two at the lakefront for the holidays. Get you're camera's ready.

Hey Rahm,
The parents of these young thugs are thugs themselves, their offspring are 3rd generation thugs.
Also, using the term parents is quite a stretch.
Seems to me there were no shootings in Edison Park,
Jefferson Park or a few other neighborhoods where parents, actually engage in parenting.
You need to be dressing down the Cook County Judges who won't jail these turds in IDOC.

I agree sympathies to our sister in blue, but isn't there a contradiction here? You say people in the ghetto have no resolution skills except pick up a gun(and I do agree) but didn't an officer(Cook County sheriff)just show the same "no resolution skill" by picking up a gun and killing his wife in an argument??

I was the original poster. I disagree. A schoolyard argument amongst kids ending in a drive by is not the same as a domestic situation that ended as a murder/suicide. Apples and oranges. Neither outcome was acceptable, but you can't compare the two.

Once her name was spoken on the news, a thread supporting her family could have been posted, editing for only positive comments. SCC has done that before when we've lost an officer, why not now?

As for Mr. "Dear God - give it a rest"

Sorry supporting one of your fellow officers and her family that might be reading this is such a burden. But even the family of a selfish shithead like you deserves some compassion.

That one could backfire. Those who don't know the whole story will assume the police aren't getting the job done. You can't convey the whole story on a billboard when people are flying by at 50+ mph.

4/21/2014 02:59:00 PM

yes R.I.P. Veronica. so sad that you were brutally murdered. May god rest your soul and comfort your family.

As for the murderer ccs that committed this senseless cowardly act. You took a life because you couldn't handle what was handed down to you. ( it wasn't a surprise, this was in the works for a long while) You weren't LOYAL to the badge yet you hid behind the LOYAL ( for how long? ).as a WARRIOR you failed. But you'll have to answer to GOD now. you've ruined the reputations of many a LOYAL group. COWARD!

Brothers /Sisters, when you think you are at the end of the road, don't hide behind a group of true , real badges, reach out and talk to someone who CAN BE TRUSTED, and give you an ear/shoulder to lean on and get help You gain nothing by hiding behind a SHIELD, you lose a lot more by acting in a cowardice way. REACH OUT there is help out there.
